Arwen didn’t understand. Or maybe she did, but was still unable to process it. "What do you mean by that?" she asked, her expression looking a little skeptical.
Reese stared at her for a moment as though still hesitating to accept the truth. But he knew he couldn’t escape from it for long.
"The medical scientist who formulated Oblivion–X was my grandfather. He was the one who first tested the drug on you," he finally said.
And Arwen was taken aback by his words. She suddenly considered and realized all the details she was missing in between. The drug was rare, yet Reese was able to find it. Of course, he did because he had known it from the very beginning.
He had known her from always. He had known all of it from always.
"Arwen, I am truly sorry for what my grandfather did. He shouldn’t have —"
Before he could finish it, Arwen raised her hand to stop him. "Don’t mention it anymore, Dr. Calvin," she said, her voice no longer carrying the same familiarity it had held for Reese moments ago. She was still polite, quite respectful, but something in her tone sounded distant, as though she was drawing the line between them. "It would have made more sense if you had explained it to me earlier. No, it makes no sense."
Reese wanted to speak ... to explain. But Arwen didn’t give him any chance.
Before he could open his mouth to explain, she cut him off, saying, "Thank you for your help and support all this time. It was really kind of you to come and see me at the hospital, but I trust Dr. Clark. He is a family, and I am sure he would be able to look after my medical condition from hereafter. You can return to rest first."
Although her words were kind, the meaning behind them was clear like a crystal. She was telling him to leave and never appear again.
Reese heard her, but he had no words to refuse. Staring at her for a long moment, he gave a small nod to her and then turned and walked out of the room.
Arwen watched him, and once he was out, she finally let her emotions out. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and when she felt Aiden’s arm wrap around her, she tilted her head to look up at him. Her vision was blurry, but she could feel the comfort and warmth radiating from him. It was calming her emotions, but at the same time, it was making her comfortable with her vulnerability.
"Ide, I don’t know, I just feel like people couldn’t just be genuine with me? Am I that undesirable?"
Aiden’s arms grew tighter around him. But then, letting it loose for a second, he got down on, holding her hand in his. "No!" he shook her head, not letting that believe such a wrong thing. "Don’t think it like that. You aren’t undeserving. You are worth everything. It’s just them. They didn’t know the right way to cherish you."
Arwen stared at him; her eyes glazed with emotions —emotions that only he could understand.
And just like that, she suddenly realized that if there was one good thing that ever happened to her —it was him.
She couldn’t hold back. Watching him, when her emotions overwhelmed her, she leaned in and wrapped her arms around his neck. He let her hold him like that, let her tears soak his shirt.
Time passed away like that. Neither she pulled away, nor did he detangle her. She remained in his embrace, letting her emotions ease. And when it did, she asked him finally.
"What did you do to her?"
She didn’t specify, but Aiden knew who she was asking about. His finger pressed into her deeply but gently ... with a serene sense of reassurance. "Something after which she would never be able to try what she did today. You don’t have to worry about her anymore."
Arwen heard him. It didn’t stun her, for she had expected it to be like that. She knew if Aiden found her, he would spare anyone there —even if the one standing in front of him would be the woman who birthed her.
And she doesn’t blame him for that. For she knew that, if she had been in his shoes, she would care about anything as well. Her instinct would be the same.
Pulling away from him slowly, she looked at him and said again, "I want to know. Can you please tell me?"
Aiden stared back at her. He wanted to refuse her. He doesn’t want her to think back about what happened. But when he saw into her eyes, he realized he would be able to refuse her.
Nodding, he finally agreed. "I will tell you."
But just as he would have, the door of the room was pushed open.
