Ruby’s POV

Leonidas nearly slipped at the corner as he ran toward me. I suppressed a frustrated sigh, slipping into the emotionless mask | always wore whenever I wanted to hide my true mood. My tongue was ready to lash out with biting words to drive him away, but the appearance of the one–eyed man held me back.

“Is there a new war that’s dragged you through the mud, Leonidas?”

He clutched his chest, panting, and shot me a glare sharp as a blade before reverting to his stoic Beta demeanor.

“Your Majesty, how flattering that you’re concerned about my well–being,” he said, flashing a brief glimpse of teeth, his way of showing he was still annoyed, though I had no idea why.

“I’m here to deliver very important news. I guarantee you’ll like it.”

That last sentence felt like it carried another meaning: “Get your act together, you’re a mess just come along.”

I imagined a stack of party invitations, noble hunting contests, or at worst some charity event surrounded by arrogant, bull–headed aristocrats wrapped in luxury fabrics.

Sure, I might be spiraling due to domestic troubles. But I’d rather rot in peace than attend any of those.

“No, Leonidas. Whatever it is you’re offering, I refuse.”

The Beta gaped. “You haven’t even heard the whole thing. Ugh, you’re going to regret this!”

“Oh? And what is it about?”

I clenched my teeth as I noted how Leonidas dropped all formalities. “I have more than enough business to take care of. Thanks ever so much for your concern. You’re such a loving cousin.”

Leonidas blinked rapidly, stunned into silence. He shook his head in disbelief.

“You’re the most stubborn person I’ve ever met. Don’t you remember you weren’t always this pessimistic, at least not when it came

to women.”

He massaged the bridge of his nose, clicked his tongue, and shoved me into a corner. I wanted to yell at him for touching me. Leonidas patted my chest, reminding me to rein in my emotions before I aged prematurely. Honestly, that was impossible.

“I happened to hear your daughter, Alice, talking to her mother,” he revealed.

That instantly caught my attention. “You mean you were eavesdropping?”

“Tsk, do you want to hear this or not?” he grumbled.

“To put it simply, Alice was persuading Ruby to talk to you. Basically, she wants you two to make up. You’d be thrilled to hear how Alice cornered her mother, insisting that you two are a couple that could never be separated even by death.”

“Alice also said she knows her mother wants to forgive her partner, Leonidas added with satisfaction, “but is still disappointed about the incident.”

It would’ve sounded made–up if it hadn’t come from Leonidas. I could see a glimmer of hope awaiting me to make things right. I

“I’m not speaking to you as your subordinate this time.” Leonidas‘ firm voice pulled me back from the brink of despair.

“I care about you. And I care about Ruby just as much. She’s my only friend. A woman I consider my own little sister. Honestly, you’ve been a real bastard.”

“God knows why. You could’ve chosen to reason with her instead of falling back into your tyrant ways. What were you thinking, Killian?” he sighed, half frustrated.

“Even so, I can’t place the blame entirely on you. In other words, it’s okay. It’s in the past now.”

He placed a hand on my shoulder, gave it a gentle squeeze, and stepped back.

“Take this chance. The twins have already been trying to convince me to help you meet their mother.”

He sniffed the air. We both caught the same scent drifting closer.

“Well then, looks like the invitation’s walking over on its own. Good luck.”

I didn’t have time to react. Leonidas was already gone, and just seconds later, he was replaced by the figure I had longed for through all those painful, sleepless nights.

Ruby’s eyes widened the moment our gazes met. She glanced to the side, her fingers fidgeting nervously. She stood completely still. Her sweet scent slowly turned sour, signaling that the she–wolf was under immense stress.

“Ruby, my precious love. Can you come closer to me?”

I softened my voice as much as I could, not wanting to frighten her or make her lose control. But instead of answering, she stared at me with teary eyes. Her quiet sobs reached my ears, tearing my heart into shapeless fragments.

“For the Gods‘ sake, mate. I’m going to get you.”

In one long stride, I pulled her slender body into my arms with ease. I hugged her tightly, sharing our longing amidst the wreckage of our hearts. Her tears soaked my shoulder. Her muffled sobs echoed against my chest. I hoped she didn’t notice how badly I was

trembling.
