Killian’s POV

“Narcissa Haelyn.”

The letters were etched onto a piece of paper. My lips moved, reading them over and over as I tried to picture the woman behind the name. An elegant, decidedly feminine name.

“Is this my future daughter–in–law?”

My whisper was far too loud to go unheard, earning a disapproving look from Beta across the room. He was still half–annoyed at the string of remarks I had made, not least because I had dared to keep something this crucial from him. Truthfully, I could understand his reaction. If my wolf children were to trust anyone besides their parents, Leonidas would certainly be one of them.

“You sound sincere, Your Majesty,” he replied.

I set the paper down on the table. “There’s no need for titles when it comes to family, Leonidas. And to answer your question, I would gladly welcome my child’s future partner with open arms so long as they are worthy of them.”

“That works both ways.” I pulled open a hidden drawer beneath the coffee table, retrieving a box of cigars and a lighter. “A relationship must be mutual, built on equal benefit. It’s much like mutualistic symbiosis you can’t keep giving without also receiving.”

Leonidas fell silent in thought. “I understand well enough especially now that I have a partner and a child. If I may say so, your third child’s journey is still a long one.”

“It’s hard to predict when it comes to the minds of gods and goddesses.”.

Neither of us was a stranger to the whims of those who toyed with fate. For both Leonidas and me, time itself had become the very air we

breathed.

“How did the meeting go?”

I couldn’t hide the fragility in my tone. The expression Leonidas gave me made the back of my neck feel weighed down by a thousand bricks.

“As you know, we came to that pack in peace and goodwill. Lúna Karina was a great help. Unfortunately, the woman matching Elias’s

description had already moved away.”

He exhaled heavily. “Even then, her condition was far from healthy. We were given the address of a relative. I heard they would return once

her treatment was complete. It’s been two years now. Sadly, there’s been no progress.”

Is the girl still part of the pack?” I asked, my voice drifting.

“Yes. The Alpha still acknowledges her.”

I pressed my forehead with a clenched fist. This new piece of news shook me to the core. I was utterly shocked as I caught the implicit meaning behind it that Elias hadn’t even had the chance to meet his potential mate. And to make matters worse, with the circumstances surrounding the girl named Narcissa, Elias was likely waging war with his inner wolf.

Mate or not, being far from your partner is enough to test the limits of one’s sanity. I had been in that position more than once. For some ordinary people, the thought of being put down within a few months would be preferable to walking through the painful reality of life with an incomplete soul.

There are exceptions, surely those with closed–off hearts or backward ideologies. To them, a soulmate is nothing more than a source of misery, an obstacle, a troublesome word that stands in the way of ambition.

1 grimaced inwardly. I was one of those pitiful few.

“Killian, are you all right?”

I waved my left hand dismissively. “No. Elias Knightley isn’t your average teenage boy. Mikael is probably raging in the afterlife right now

because Elias is far from the sweet child he’d have wanted.”

Rubbing the corner of my eyebrow, I shot him a sharp look. “So, give me the rest of the story.”

“You know me, cousin Killian. Before my nephew even came to me for help, I would have gone to you first. An uncle is a pillar of support, no less than a father,” he said defensively.

There was a brief pause as Leonidas searched for the right words. It made me wish Ruby were here. I feared the worst–case scenario might be

on the horizon.

“Elias is very quiet,” Leonidas said, his gaze fixed far away. “There wasn’t much I could filter into usable information. Still, I dare say Elías isn’t

too thrilled about having a mate.”
