Ruby’s POV

One month has passed. I still can’t forget. Everything feels as though it happened just yesterday. In the beginning, I would growl and lash out at anyone who came near, making it difficult for the nurses and caretakers to help either me or my baby.

They couldn’t be blamed not when I had nearly lost something I loved.

I lowered my head, watching the baby curl up, seeking the comfort of his mother. A small smile formed on my lips, and the hardness in my eyes began to soften. The scent of milk drifted from the child, mingling with the smell of baby powder and herbal oil meant to strengthen his tiny bones.

“You’re so gorgeous.”

I gently patted the edge of his blanket, a faint chuckle escaping me.

“Elias finally has a new friend. He used to only play with his sisters. According to him, they’re terribly annoying now because the twins have grown more mature than he is,” I monologue, more to myself than anyone else.

“Your big brother is very protective of you,” I added. “Unfortunately, he’s currently in his study room with his tutor. Arithmetic lessons. You’ll be seeing him often, you know. He’s not going to public school until he’s fifteen.”

The baby wriggled in response.

There was something deeply soothing about being here alone with my child. I still didn’t feel safe around too many people. My thoughts wandered to one person in particular. It was hard for me to utter even a single word to him, when he held this fragile, blood–scented creature in his arms, proving that

he meant no harm.

Elias still hasn’t told me how he managed to save us.

Word of his abilities eventually reached even the witches of the Tower. Nora, my old friend, insisted on meeting him. I’m certain Elias is purely a werewolf. Neither Mikael nor I come from a line of witches.

Or I could be wrong. Sometimes, inheritance comes from the farthest and most unexpected branches. But from whose side?

Digging into that might reopen old wounds. Even now, I can’t bring myself to step foot back into my old pack even though they welcomed me with open

arms.

“Mom?”

My eyes blinked, my focus falling on Alice, who stood by the door with her hand slightly raised,

“I knocked twice. Am I disturbing you?” she asked.

“Not at all, Alice. I was just lost in my own thoughts,” I replied gently.

“Um, may I come in?”

“Yes, come here.”

With my permission, she quickly approached. Her eyes sparkled, mesmerized by the tiny life before her, a new little sibling who now displaced Elias as the youngest.

“I think he’s a bit bigger than Elias was as a baby. Hmm, my childhood memory must be really clear.”

I chuckled. “No one ever doubted how sharp your mind is.”

“So, what’s his name? It’s been weeks. Alicia’s even made up a name just to make it easier for us to call him.”

I froze. I hadn’t even thought about that too overwhelmed by everything else weighing on me. Sensing the shift in my expression, Alice gently interjected.

“You should talk to Dad,” she suggested cautiously.

I narrowed my eyes. “Did he send you here?”

“No. But I observe. Just like everyone else.” She gave me a quick glance before turning her attention back to her baby brother. “Everyone in this castle is practically going mad from the tension between you two.”

That flicker of anger returned, burning hot inside

“Yes, I just found out! And I’m angry too, okay?” Alice shot me a look of apology for raising her voice. “But it’s already been dealt with. Remember, communication is key. You can’t keep going on like this, Mom. None of us can stay away from our true mates forever, unless you plan to sever the bond.”

A chill crept over my skin. I swallowed hard, assaulted by terrible images in

my mind.

Alice let out a sigh. “Mom, if you looked in the mirror right now, you’d I see what honesty looks like on your face.”.

“I’m still disappointed.”

“That’s valid. No one’s going to judge you for it.”
