Chapter 168
Killian’s POV
“What is sin?”
I had often sprinkled sugar over lies. There was never any guilt when I did it for personal gain. But it felt different when it involved family: Ruby and especially now, the children. I had told them their mother would be fine. The kingdom had the best healers on the continent and had even gone as far as requesting the aid of the tower’s sorcerers to heal Ruby.
Everything possible had been done. I was fairly confident the outcome would be positive and that Ruby would open her eyes soon. It’s been three days, and yet there’s still no sign she will return to the world of the living. She is in a coma.
I’ve only cried three times in my life. The first was when Ruby left me. The second, when the children fell ill. And the third now. It feels humiliating to appear this broken. The twins and Elias have voiced their concern, even though they’re just as wrecked, thinking about their mother.
“Dad, you need to eat. Mom wouldn’t be happy knowing you’re skipping meals like a kindergartener sulking over not getting a new toy,” Alice complained with a touch of humor, hoping to lift my spirits.
I replied to her little joke with one of my own. I didn’t want to add any more weight to this already tense atmosphere.
“If that’s what it takes to wake her up, then I’ll keep doing it.”
Alice rolled her eyes. “Don’t act like a teenager missing a sponge in their brain cell. That’s our job.”
“What did Dad do this time, Alice?”
The voice came from behind us. We turned to find Alicia with Elias. I winced at the sight of the youngest. Meanwhile, Alice pointed a rather impolite finger in my direction.
“This old man hasn’t eaten since yesterday. One of you, please do something!”
Alice gave me a disapproving look. “Didn’t I bring you a plate of fruit and meat this morning? You promised you’d eat it, didn’t you?”
“I did eat it, sweetheart,” I replied, trying to reassure her.
“Just one bite, huh?” Alice accused.
Alicia let out an exasperated sigh. In that moment, she resembled Ruby when she was angry. On the other hand, Elias clung to me. He was a complete
contrast, one hundred and eighty degrees different from his sisters. After that long lecture, I finally agreed to eat, insisting on staying in the room with Ruby. The twins puffed their cheeks in victory when I finally brought the spoon to my mouth and made sure to chew actual food. They both left soon after when their etiquette tutor called for them. Still, I could see the deep sadness etched on their faces.
“Leonidas has taken over my duties. I’ll be the one caring for your mother,” I said gently.
Alicia glanced at her mother, lying motionless, her swollen belly carrying the child that would soon be their sibling. The teenager’s face hardened.
“I demand a price for what has happened to her. Can you grant me that, Father?”
I wasn’t entirely surprised by the pure resentment in Alicia’s voice. She may have looked like the softer version of her twin sister, but she was far more ruthless. Of course, that was something she had learned from her first painful experience with a cruel ex–lover. Secretly, I took some comfort in knowing one of my children was a little like me.
“It’s already in motion.”
Alicia stared at me for a moment. “I want to see it later. You’ve already gotten some of them, haven’t you?”
“Yes.”

Her back disappeared behind the large door. At the same time, the pain surged. Tears slipped from the corners of my eyes as I forced myself to finish the last two bites of the meal. I no longer knew how much longer I could keep my head held high.

I set the plate down on the dining table. The attendants immediately began clearing it as I gave the signal.
