The announcement reverberated through the air, electrifying the atmosphere as Aiden Knight was officially declared the new leader of Montrose. The house erupted in a chorus of jubilant cheers, echoing off the walls as if the very structure itself celebrated the moment.
“Finally,” Corvin murmured, his voice barely above a whisper, as he reclined on the plush, newly acquired couch, a hint of satisfaction lacing his tone.
In stark contrast to the excitement around me, I found myself kneeling on the floor, focused intently on smoothing out the wrinkles in one of Calista’s dresses. The others were gathered around the television, their eyes glued to the screen. Rowena leaned forward, her brow furrowed in concentration as the cameras zoomed in on Aiden, who flashed a brief, charming wave to the crowd.
“He’s not bad at all,” she said, nudging Calista playfully with her elbow. “Look at that jawline! So noble.”
Calista nodded eagerly, her eyes sparkling with admiration. “Hmm,” she agreed, her enthusiasm palpable.
But then, the broadcast shifted to Elias, standing tall and imposing among his battalion, his armor glistening under the lights like a knight from a fairy tale. Rowena immediately clicked her tongue in disapproval, her excitement swiftly replaced by disdain.
“Aiden Knight is good,” she corrected herself, “but Elias Rue is the best.”
Calista’s eyes lit up with fervor, her admiration for Elias evident. “He’s got more money, too. With Fenra’s Elite blood flowing through his veins, he really is the complete package. If we’re ranking them, it’s Elias first, Aiden second. Everyone knows that.”
I fought to suppress my reaction, but the iron I held paused mid-stroke, betraying my inner turmoil.
Corvin, arms crossed and a smirk playing on his lips, scoffed. “It’s like your list of crushes and delusions, Calista. You’ve got them all lined up like a tournament bracket.”
Calista gasped, her hands flying to her chest in mock horror. “Shut up, Corvin! I’m being realistic! Elias Rue and Aiden Knight are both right here in Montrose, practically within reach. How can I not prepare for my future?”
With a dramatic flip of her hair over her shoulder, she continued, “Aiden is charming, but Elias is the epitome of perfection.”
“It’s Elias for me,” Calista insisted, hugging a pillow tightly, her voice dripping with longing. “Those lips—ugh—his lips. I can only imagine what it would feel like to kiss him—”

The iron slipped from my grasp, tumbling onto its side with a sharp thud against the wooden floor.
All three of them turned their heads in unison, their gazes locking onto me.
Heat rushed to my cheeks, a wave of embarrassment washing over me.
Why… why did she have to voice that question out loud? Why now, when the memory of him—his body shielding me, the rush of breath he knocked out of me—still lingered vividly in my mind?
“Careful,” Calista hissed, her eyes wide with alarm. “That’s what I’m wearing to the election after-party later!”
“Election after-party?” I echoed, my mind racing to process this unexpected revelation.
Rowena nodded, her expression firm. “And you’re helping. Calista needs someone to carry her essentials, so you’re definitely coming.”
“Oh.”
“I’m actually going with you?” I asked, a tinge of disbelief creeping into my voice.
“Yes,” she confirmed, her tone brooking no argument. “Calista needs help with her hair. Everything has to be perfect for Elias Rue and Aiden Knight. And,” she added, shooting me a pointed look, “don’t bring attention to yourself. This is not your moment to shine.”
I didn’t argue; there was simply no point. It was far better to be lost in the cacophony of a lively party than to be ensnared by the suffocating grip of that memory.
Calista resumed her dreamy musings, swaying in her seat as if lost in a fantasy.
