Abel was lying beside me, staring at me, smiling like he had just won the grandest competition of his life.

His hand was moving gently through my hair, brushing the strands away from my face,

“Good morning,” he murmured, brushing another loose strand behind my ear.

I shoved his chest weakly. “Stop smiling at me like that.”

He chuckled, and then the menace actually threw his head back and laughed.

“Seriously!” I exclaimed, glaring at him through half–lidded eyes.

“So,” he said, “who are you calling old man now?”

I opened my mouth to retort, but closed it right away.

Because absolutely not–I was not going to call him old today. Not after last night.

My legs twitched, and pain shot up my thighs.

He smirked like he could hear the defeat inside

my skull.

“Uh–huh,” he teased, brushing his thumb over my cheek. “Thought so.”

Before I could fling a pillow at his face, he sat up and glanced toward Snow’s nursery. Then he quietly stood, walking over to check on her.

“She’s still out,” he whispered, returning to my side. “She really did tire herself out yesterday.”

I nodded and tried to stand up.

However, my core trembled and my legs protested.

I slapped his shoulder. “You… you did this.”

“And you didn’t stop me,” he said smugly.

I glared at him, but he only kissed the top of my head.

He nudged the bathroom door open with his foot. Warm steam greeted us–he had run the water earlier. How long had he been awake? The absurd man probably woke up energetic and refreshed, like last night was a light jog.

He set me down gently on the counter, holding me steady when my legs wobbled again.

He cupped my cheek. “You okay?”

“No,” I snapped without heat. “Everything hurts.”

He grinned.

“Abel!”

“Sorry,” he said. “I’ll take care of it.”

I crossed my arms, pouting. “You already said you cleaned me up last night…”

His eyes softened. “I did,” he said quietly. “But you were half–asleep. You don’t remember.”

I swallowed.

He moved closer, brushing my hair away from my temple with a slow, intimate touch.

“I just wanted you comfortable,” he murmured. “You were so tired.”

My frustration melted a little.

Maybe more than a little.

He pressed his forehead to mine, breathing me in.

“Let me do it again,” he whispered.

I buried my face against his shoulder, overwhelmed.

“You’re too sweet,” I whispered.

“I love you,” he murmured into my hair, holding me like I was the only thing in his world.

The warm water touched my skin, and he kept an arm around me, guiding me.

“We can finally eat something.” My stomach growled right on cue, and he laughed.

We moved to the kitchen, both of us walking a little slower. He cooked quickly, and within minutes, there were plates on the table and the smell of something warm and sweet filling the air.

“This is nice,” I said softly as I sat down.

I took a bite of the cream–filled pastry he’d made, humming in satisfaction. Abel watched me eat with a smile that grew impossibly softer every second.

“Good?” he asked.

“Mhm,” I said, mouth full.

He leaned across the table and wiped a bit of cream from the corner of my lips with his thumb.
