They both grinned, faces lighting up, though there was something behind their eyes. I could tell they already knew something. Abel must have told Cade and Rowan, and naturally, nothing stayed secret among them.
“I know what you’re thinking about,” I said softly.
They pursed their lips.
“Are you alright?” Tessa asked, her tone cautious, as though she already feared the answer.
“Of course,” I said quickly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
But just as I said it, the nausea hit again. I clutched my mouth, my body lurching forward. “Excuse me—”
They scrambled up instantly, one on each side of me. The bathroom wasn’t far, but it felt like miles as the dizziness hit. My reflection in the mirror was pale, almost ghostly, sweat beading on my temple as I fell to my knees and retched.
It wasn’t the first time, but this felt different. My stomach twisted violently, and I grabbed the sides of the bowl, praying it would stop.
Then I saw the color of the substance that came out of me.
Dark red.
For a split second, my mind froze. I was hoping it was just the light, but there was no mistaking it. My breath caught in my throat.
Blood.
I tried to cover it quickly, flushing the bowl, fumbling for the handle with trembling fingers. But I knew from the silence behind me that it was too late.
“Luna…” Arden’s voice came out soft, shaky, her reflection meeting mine in the mirror. Her eyes were wide, horror dawning across her face.
I forced a weak smile, wiping my mouth. “It’s fine,” I whispered. “It’s just morning sickness. It happens sometimes.”
But my body betrayed me. I swayed slightly, the color draining from my face. Tessa rushed forward to hold my arm, her expression tightening.
“Arden,” she said under her breath.

Arden was already kneeling beside me, one hand steadying my shoulder, the other hovering uncertainly near my stomach. I could feel her pulse tremble against my skin.
“Luna,” she whispered again, this time more firmly. Her gaze flicked toward the bowl, then back at me.
“I don’t think it’s normal that you’re puking blood.”
I stood quietly and rinsed my mouth, staring at the pale pink of the sink. The metallic taste clung stubbornly to my tongue. My hands were shaking; I clung to the edge of the basin until they stopped. When I turned, Arden and Tessa were still looking at me with concern.
“Don’t tell him,” I said before I could talk myself out of it.
“Don’t tell Abel, please,” I repeated.
Saying his name in that context made my chest ache.
Their eyes widened. “Why not?” she asked.
If he knew, he would do something irrevocable. He would make the choice he’d said he couldn’t bear, and I would never, ever forgive myself for being the cause.
I sighed and forced a thin smile. “I can’t tell him.” I rinsed again, then pressed my palms flat against the mirror until the glass fogged under my touch.
Tessa crossed the room and took my hands in both of hers. “Luna, you need to be honest. For medical reasons-”
“No,” I cut in. “I know you mean well, Tess, but he’d renounce his title.”
“And Jaxon-”
“He’d take over,” Arden finished for me. “You know how his family operates. They’d leap at the chance.”
My grip tightened on the sink, knuckles blanching.
“That’s why I can’t do this,” I muttered. Tessa’s gaze seemed to pierce the layer of reason I kept piled over my fear. Her hands tightened around mine.
Tessa’s voice was careful. “You would do the same thing he would–protect the pack before yourself?”
“No.” The denial burned. “I would never want to put him in a position where he’d have to

choose between me and them.” My throat constricted on the words. “Abel would renounce before he let me die because of him. He’d rather be stripped of power than let me die. I heard it in his voice that night by the lake–he couldn’t imagine losing me and still wearing the title. He said as much.”
Arden’s fingers brushed my belly. “And if he renounces, Jaxon takes over,” she said. “He’ll welcome anyone who promises power. He won’t care how many people get trampled in the process.”
“I don’t know if the curse is absolute,” I said, whispering, because saying it out loud frightened
Tessa pursed her lips. “Even as a doctor, I haven’t seen it.”
“Lycans are rare creatures on their own. They also keep to themselves to keep the bloodline pure. The last time I heard, they really won’t copulate because of the risks that come with cross–breeding. It’s not harmful to pure–bloods but to their children.”
I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair.
Arden cleared her throat.
“I didn’t realize it before because I was so young, but the West was really behind when the Trevanes were in the position of authority. Bullying was rampant. Only those who were already rich thrived, and our reforms were the worst out of every faction.”
“However, it changed dramatically when Abel took over. He really did shape the West for the better.”
A small smile appeared on my lips.
That’s my Abel.
“See?” I asked in a slight defeat. “If he knows that this is happening to me, he will abandon the West.”
Another sigh escaped my lips, looking the two of them in the eyes. “I know you would do the same thing if you were in my situation.”
“You can’t bear to watch the people suffer.”
Tessa pursed her lips before cursing under her breath.
“Fuck me.”
