Miles stammered, unable to answer.
“I’ll tell her,” Evelyn raised her hand and pulled Isabel aside. “I already got the whole story.”
Miles huddled by Julian’s bed, muttering, “It’s not my fault, man. The opposition is too strong. Don’t blame me when you wake up.”

Evelyn sat Isabel down on the sofa, and Edmund poured them both some water. Amanda hadn’t come back with them; they had passed near her place, so she went home, telling them to call if they needed anything.
“Thanks, sweetie.” Evelyn took a sip of hot water before speaking. “The injury is serious, but don’t worry, I checked with the doctor. He’ll be fine as long as he rests. He heals quickly. As for how it happened, it’s the usual stuff, you know. Trying to go completely legit comes at a high price.”
“Go legit?” Isabel didn’t know about this. She had assumed Adrian was behind it.
Evelyn patted her hand, sensing her thoughts. “Of course. It was already going to be difficult for him to clean up his business, but with Adrian causing trouble, he was bound to get hurt.”
Isabel’s hands, resting on her lap, clenched into fists. “It’s all my fault.”
It was one thing before, but ever since Julian started helping her, he had been getting seriously injured.
“Mommy, it’s not your fault. This was part of the plan anyway. Because he had to take me with him, Daddy’s side of things had to change. Some of his past businesses had to be shifted.”
