Sophia could not stand the whiny voice of this girl and eventually agreed.
The three of them walked to the ward together. Clara was almost completely clinging herself onto Sophia, chattering non-stop the whole way.
Zachary glanced at the two of them a few times, his expression turning more and more dreadful by the minute. Finally, he strode over with a dark expression on his face and yanked Clara off of Sophia.
"What’s wrong with you?" Clara glared at her.
Zachary pushed his gold-rimmed glasses and answered with a deadpan look on his face, "You’re too fat. You’re crushing Ms. White."
"!!!" Clara's eyes widened abruptly as she asked Sophia nervously, "Is that true?"
Sophia glanced at the hostile man before sighing subtly and nodding her head.
Seeing that this was the case, Clara, the young girl who was full of vigor, was instantly sapped of all energy as she followed behind the two. She was sighing all the way. Nevertheless, she did not cling herself onto Sophia anymore.
The three of them entered the ward. The spacious and bright ward livened up with their presence in an instant.
Charles sat on the hospital bed. His gaze went beyond Zachary and fell on Sophia, flashing over and over again. Then, he withdrew his expression naturally. "Why are you here?"
"I came on behalf of the masses to see if you’re still alive." Zachary walked to the table and sniffed around the thermos barrel. "Where did you buy this chicken soup? It smells pretty good."
The chicken soup in the bowl was untouched and still warm. He picked it up and took two sips. "It tastes pretty good too."
Charles looked askance at him. "A dog's nose may not even compare to yours."
"You flatter me. This is not something you can afford to be jealous of." Zachary took two more sips as he talked. "Marie said that you nearly punctured an artery? Are you that cruel to yourself too?"
Charles did not make a sound but raised his eyes and looked at Sophia instead.
Sophia was seemingly unaware as she lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze.
Zachary tsk-ed at their subtle interaction and put the bowl down, saying in a rather malicious manner, "Actually, stabbing your thigh isn’t as effective as stabbing your manhood. Why did you..."
As Charles' gaze was too intimidating, he coughed and stopped talking.
Clara, who had been cowering behind Sophia, suddenly poked her head out and knocked them off their feet by saying, "That’s right. Men’s testicles hurt so much more compared to other parts of the body. You don't even need to stab it. Just twist it once and you’ll probably… Mmm!"
Zachary stalked toward her with a livid look on his face and covered her mouth. "Shut your mouth!"
Sophia stood on one side without saying a word, excluding herself from their conversation.
"I’m not planning to change my gender." Charles shot Zachary a cool glance. "If you’re planning to change your gender, I will be more than happy to sponsor you with the funds for the procedure."
Zachary, "..."
He refused Charles' ‘kindness’ without even thinking about it.
That was the end of the topic. Clara cowered behind Sophia again and complained to her in a whisper, "I think Big Iceberg is up to no good every time he smiles, but when he doesn’t smile, I think that nothing good will come out of it either."
Sophia hummed nonchalantly and focused her eyes on the ground.
Clara shivered in an exaggerated manner and hugged her arms around her chest, muttering, "Actually, calling him Big Iceberg isn’t really fitting either. He smiles a lot too even though they look fake… Gosh, he’s looking at me!!! Did he hear me talking about him?!!!"
After hearing what he said, Sophia's hands that were hanging limply down both sides of her body clenched slightly. The scenes that she had deliberately erased from her memory started playing in her head uncontrollably, making her chest feel stuffy.
Without saying anything, she turned around and walked out.
Clara grabbed her from behind. She was constantly on the alert to see if she was going to escape. "Where are you going?"
"I’m going out to make a phone call." Sophia rubbed the sore area between her eyebrows and made a perfunctory excuse.
Clara stole a glance at Charles and whispered in her ears, "I’m coming with you. I promise to stay far away from you after we go out and will not eavesdrop on your call."
Sophia let out a soft hum and walked out. Clara followed behind her like a tail.
After they left, Zachary closed the door and finally asked, "What really happened this time? They said that Sophia seduced you, that she was taking revenge and that you were sleeping with Sophia... There are all kinds of versions out there. Also, how did you stab your way into the hospital?"
"Sterling put sleeping pills and aphrodisiacs in my drink." Charles furrowed his eyebrows and loosened them quickly. His reply was succinct.
"?" Zachary was confused and amused at the same time but also a little surprised. "You fell into such an outdated trap?"
Charles fiddled with the folds on his patient clothes. He lifted his head to glance at him, then lowered it again. "I didn't expect him to hit below the belt. I wasn’t on guard."
Sterling detested these petty and outdated tricks the most. Whenever he wanted to give somebody a hard time or found someone to be an eyesore, he would confront them head-on, never hitting below the belt.
The elders of the Johnsons and the Whites were good friends, but Zachary and Sterling had always disagreed with each other and found each other unpleasant to the eye.
"Sterling is such a straightforward person that there isn’t a single leeway in the middle at all. It’s understandable why you weren’t on your guard." Zachary pushed down his gold-rimmed glasses and said with a smile, “Heavens know if this fool has taken the wrong medicine lately. He landed a position in White Industries and went out to talk business like everyone else. He ended up getting cheated because he couldn’t even read the contract properly."
