Charles hummed a reply, seemingly pensive. "He's doing it for his sister."
"???" For a moment, Zachary could not understand him. "How does Sophia have anything to do with his business?"
Charles looked up at him. After a moment, he said slowly, "You? A gold medal lawyer? Are those people blind or is your brain flooded?"
"Charles, you should be stoked to have a friend like me in your life. I’m the only one who can stand your temper!" Zachary pushed his glasses and squinted his eyes at him. "Sterling is learning how to manage a business because he’s trying to save Sophia from your clutches, right?"
Charles turned his head and looked out the window. Sophia was standing at the railing with her back turned against him. She was scrawny; her back lonely. It was hard to associate her with the arrogant noble daughter from two years ago.
His heart twitched in pain uncontrollably. It felt as though insects and ants were gnawing on it.
"Feeling sorry for her?" Zachary followed his gaze. "You mentioned that this time Sophia seduced you after Sterling drugged you. Why didn’t you just sleep with her so both of you can just get together accordingly? How nice would that be?”
Charles retracted his gaze, twirling the quilt with his fingertips. "They installed a spycam and tried to record a video to threaten me."
"Huh?" Zachary was so astonished that his mouth fell open halfway. Although these siblings had adopted an old-fashioned method, he must admit that it was simple and effective but also very risky.
Charles lowered his eyes. The orange sunlight shone on him, covering a huge part of his face in the darkness. "I don't feel sorry for her. She asked for it."
Zachary, "..."
"I really don’t understand!" Zachary disregarded his image and tugged at his hair. "What exactly happened between you and Sophia two years ago?"
For a lawyer who had a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, it was too tormenting for him to know only the result of a case without knowing the truth.
Bang!
Clara slammed the door open. She could not stand it anymore as she grumbled at Zachary, "Zachary, even women don’t talk as much nonsense as you. Are you going to dinner or not? If you’re not going to leave, then I'll go with Sophia. I'm so, so, so hungry!!!"
Having said that, she put on a brave face and glared several times at Charles. The latter, however, looked as though he did not notice it, leaving her exceedingly frustrated.
"Let’s go. We’ll leave right now." Zachary immediately tossed aside the so-called ‘truth of the case’ in one corner, then grabbed his briefcase and walked out.
Charles called out behind him. "I didn't drive here. Take me home after I change my clothes."
Clara lowered her head, rolling her eyes in contempt.
"Aren’t you going to stay two more days in the hospital?" Zachary asked.
Charles replied, "No."
"Alright. Go change your clothes, then." Zachary glanced at the thermos barrel. "You didn't really drink the chicken soup, though. I suppose you haven’t had your dinner yet? We’re just about to go and grab dinner. Do you want to eat something with us before you go home?"
Clara wanted to refuse the moment she heard that he was going to invite Charles to dinner. Unfortunately, he had finished talking before she could even refuse.
She was dumbfounded. Eating together with Big Iceberg was a sheer weight loss diet for her!
"Um. Mr. Harris is injured. He can't eat stuff like spicy crayfish or spicy tofu hotpot!" Clara chuckled and continued. "It's best for him to go home and have his meal. Porridge will be the best choice for a patient!"
Charles looked as though he did not detect the resistance in her tone. He took out his clothes, got out of the bed, and walked toward the bathroom. "You don't need to worry about me. You can eat whatever you want. Just get me a bowl of soup or porridge."
"It's okay, don’t feel burdened, I won't laugh at you. Back in my university days, a roommate of mine had hemorrhoids too. She told me that it was very uncomfortable, and she was constantly itching to scratch it. When no one was around, she would go straight ahead and scratch it. When someone was around, she would rub herself on the stool. It's crazy itchy apparently." Clara’s face was all scrunched up as she empathized with her.
After hearing what she said, Charles’ gaze fell on Sophia's hips. He wanted to say something but decided not to do so on second thought, furrowing his brows.
Having her bottom getting stared at by three people at the same time, Sophia moved her arms and legs uncomfortably. "I don't have hemorrhoids."
"Then why were you rubbing on the seat just now?" Clara was certain that she had hemorrhoids and said in an extremely open-minded manner, "We’re at the hospital. You don't have to feel embarrassed about it. You’ll recover quicker if you attend to it sooner. Come, I’ll go with you!"
Sophia could not explain the reason why she was squirming in her seat, but she could not actually check for hemorrhoids either. She grabbed the hem of her blouse and said, "It's just a mosquito bite on my bum. I don’t have hemorrhoids."
Clara sighed at the thought that there were still big mosquitoes around even in this weather. She stopped talking about hemorrhoids altogether.
Sophia breathed a sigh of relief and dared not move anymore. She clung to the car window, regretting having ever agreed to Clara’s request to have dinner together.
When they were nearly there, there was a rear-ended collision involving several cars in front of them. Zachary slammed on the emergency brakes to avoid crashing into the car in front.
He had slammed the brakes without any warning. Zachary and Clara were fine as they had put on their seat belts. Sophia, however, sat in the backseat without putting on her seat belt. Her entire body shot forward with inertia as she slammed into the front seat.
She reacted very quickly by subconsciously reaching out her hands to press against the front seat to avoid slamming into it.
Sophia did not slam into the front seat in the end. Her forehead stopped less than a centimeter away from the front seat.
However, there was now a man’s palm with defined joints placed between her two hands on the front seat. At this moment, this palm just so happened to be cushioning her forehead.
