Charles gazed fixedly at her with his dark and gloomy eyes without a word.
This time, Sophia did not lower her head like she always did. She stared back at him in neither a supercilious nor obsequious manner. There was also a certain extent of provocation and arrogance hidden in her eyes.
Strangely, this version of her matched up with her personality from two years ago. Charles’ throat rolled slightly, and his gaze fell on the red spot on her neck. "William came to you?"
It was a question, yet it was uttered in an unquestionable tone. He did not even realize the sourness in his tone.
Sophia’s eyes dimmed a little. She said sarcastically, "Thanks to you, now everyone in your circle knows me for being wild. Even Mr. Jones wants to keep me as his lover.”
"Keep you as his lover?" Charles was tapping his fingers on the bed faster now. He deliberately brushed aside the inexplicable irritation in his heart and sneered. "He doesn’t even need to spend any money and you’re already dying to glue yourself to him, right?"
Sophia looked straight at him, then chuckled and looked away. “I don’t care who it’s going to be. I will be dying to glue to anyone as long as he can get me out of Dream Club."
She bent down and leaned closer to him. Her voice was slightly lower now, even the curvature on her mouth had loosened slightly. "Are you happy with this answer, Mr. Harris?"
Charles’ fingers that were tapping on the bed paused for a moment. Clenching his fists, he leaned forward and reached out to pinch her chin. "William isn’t capable enough to take you away. This will just be a waste of your energy."
Sophia pulled his hand away before straightening up her body and taking a few steps back, pulling a distance between them.
"Do you think he cares about your affairs after you crippled his sister and after he and Audrey have just gotten engaged?"
"Even if he wants to take you away from Dream Club at all cost, the moment his mother, his sister, or his fiancée questions him, he won’t hesitate to abandon you out of guilt for Leah, for the Jones family’s reputation, and the so-called righteousness that he so firmly upholds.
"When the time comes, you will only end up losing more than you gain." Charles’ countenance remained the same, but his slightly clenched fists had already been released as he tapped his well-defined fingers on the table over and over again. This was a habit he would have when he was exceedingly restless.
Sophia glanced mildly at him and said, "I'm willing."
Charles frowned after hearing what she said. He reached out and undid another button on his patient clothes. His good-looking face darkened a little and there seemed to be dark clouds looming in his eyes.
Sophia was in high spirits. "I’ve followed Marie’s orders and brought you the chicken soup. Now if you’ll excuse me, I still have work to do."
She did not take a second look at him and curled her lips as she walked out the door under his somewhat tangible gaze.
Her phone started vibrating. Sophia glanced at the caller ID, and her eyes softened slightly. As soon as she picked up the call, she said, "Nicole—"
"Long story short." Nicole's voice sounded much more urgent than usual.
Sophia clenched her phone tightly in her hands. Her body stiffened when she heard those words. "Nicole… is something wrong?"
Nicole was anxious to death. "After Mom and Dad visited you yesterday, Dad came home and lost his temper. He confiscated your brother's bank card, mobile phone, and computer, banning him from sneaking money to you. He’s also not allowed to have any sort of contact with you anymore.
"Your brother refused to listen, so Dad locked him up straight away. He can’t go anywhere and is trapped at home. Mom tried to persuade Dad, saying that you’re their daughter too, but Dad just won’t listen to reason."
She sighed and changed the subject. "Alright, let’s not waste time on nonsense. Your brother wants me to ask you if you’re okay? Did Charles give you a hard time after finding out that the two of you drugged him and fixed a spycam?”
Sophia hummed a reply and said in a low voice, "Hello, Ms. Robertson."
"Perfect timing!" Clara pinched Zachary's armpits twice and got down successfully. Her eyes rolled in their sockets as she said, "Zachary said that he would like to invite you to dinner as a token of apology! Let’s go and have dinner together after we visit Big Iceberg!"
Sophia glanced at Zachary whose complexion had turned crimson with pain, but he was forced to act calm for the sake of his image. Then, her gaze fell on Clara. "I..."
"Oh, have you had dinner?" Clara interrupted her by making unnecessary noise. Before she could answer, she answered her own question, "It's still early, so you probably haven’t eaten anything yet. What do you like to eat? I’ll reserve a table!"
She took out her phone and started swiping away.
"I’ll pass, Ms. Robertson." Sophia said, "I don’t often see Mr. Johnson. He hasn’t done me any wrong that he needs to be sorry for. Speaking of which, the two of you have helped me several times now. I should be the one saying thank you."
Clara put her phone away and pouted. "He said that you harbored evil intentions for approaching me and asked you to stay away from me in the future. That’s an offense to you and to me!"
She harrumphed heavily, glaring at Zachary with her huge watery eyes. She then yelled in a long tone, “Zachary!!!”
"Ms. White, I have been too presumptuous for saying those things to you last time." Zachary stroked Clara's hair that she had tied up in a bun in a helpless and pampered manner. Then, he turned his head and said to Sophia, "I do hope that you will do me this honor and have a meal with Clara and me."
Sophia turned him down politely and said, "You’re too polite, Mr. Johnson. Ms. Robertson is no ordinary girl. It’s normal for you to think of me that way. You don’t have to take it to heart."
"Sophia..." Clara took her hand and started whining in a pitiful manner. "Are you mad at me? Is that why you refuse to have dinner with me?"
