The driver reached out, giving Ethan’s shoulder a gentle pat.
The secretary, finally snapping out of her daze, tried to get Ethan to stop crying.
Ethan couldn’t hold back. If he didn’t care about Isabella, he wouldn’t have been falling apart like this. His sobs were so gut-wrenching that even the people standing around started to tear up.
The coroner’s van pulled up.
A police officer walked over, speaking softly as he asked Ethan to let go of Isabella, so the staff could take her body. Because it was a murder case and her identity was confirmed, her body wouldn’t be cremated right away. She’d be kept in cold storage at the morgue until the case was solved.
But Ethan wouldn’t let go. He clung to Isabella, shouting at everyone that she wasn’t dead, that she was just asleep.
It wasn’t until Jeremy arrived, gently pulling Ethan away, that the staff could finally take Isabella’s body.
Ethan tried to follow the van.
Jeremy hadn’t expected Ethan to be this devastated. After three years of marriage, there were bound to be feelings. Jeremy understood his pain, but if Ethan was hurting this much, why had he agreed to the divorce in the first place? If he loved her, why hadn’t he stayed away from Natalie and tried to make things work with Isabella?
Isabella had loved Ethan so much. If he’d just let Natalie go and given Isabella a real chance, she would have forgiven everything. She would have been happy, if only he’d chosen her.
“Ethan, what we need to do now is find who killed Isabella. That’s the only way she’ll be able to rest.”
“Isabella’s dead...”
Ethan grabbed Jeremy’s arm, his eyes swollen and red, his cheeks streaked with tears. He clung to Jeremy, voice broken. “She’s dead... How could she be dead?”
“I have to get revenge for her. Whoever did this, I’ll make them pay. I’ll destroy them.”
“Isabella, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. If I’d known, I never would have divorced you. I didn’t want to, you were the one who insisted... I thought...”
Ethan could barely get the words out, his voice shaking.
Pain, guilt, regret—they crashed over him, pulling him under.
