Frank broke the news to Laura, his voice gentle but heavy. Isabella’s body had been found, and now she was in cold storage at the funeral home. They couldn’t cremate her until the police figured out what happened. After Frank said all that, Laura didn’t say a word. The line went quiet. He could only imagine how hard the news must have hit her.
The Adams family wanted Ethan to go back with them to the estate, but he wouldn’t have it. He needed to return to the villa he’d shared with Isabella after they got married. Jeremy and Frank stayed by his side, following him home.
Stepping into the house he and Isabella had lived in for three years, Ethan felt for a moment like she might come out to greet him, just like before. No matter how late he got home, Isabella was always there, waiting. She’d come to the door with a smile and say, “You’re home.”
He used to hate when she called him that. She’d insist, though, saying they were married and it was her right. She was stubborn about it, teasing him with her sweet talk, and there was nothing he could do. Most nights, he just grunted and tossed his suit jacket at her. She’d catch it, hug it close, and walk in behind him, asking, “I made you a late-night snack. Want some?”
He always answered the same way. “I’m not hungry. No, thanks. You have it.” He must’ve said that a hundred times.
She’d get frustrated and call him out. “You never eat what I make, always saying you’re not hungry. But if Natalie invites you out for a midnight snack, you run out the door like it’s the best idea you’ve ever heard.”
“Is my cooking really that bad? You turn down everything I make, but you’re happy to try something from someone else’s wife. I’m your wife, Ethan. Shouldn’t you give me a little respect, not Natalie?”
“She’s married to Jordan now, and she’s not as perfect as you think. She always starts something with me. I just push back. In front of everyone, she acts so fragile.”
“She loves to play the victim. I say a few things, she cries, and you always take her side. You never believe me. Not once.”
