Even Fairfax had never given her such a profound sense of security.
"Did that scare you?" Yardley asked gently.
"Mmm," Starla mumbled, still shaken from the video. If anything had happened to the director, she would have torn Harriet apart with her bare hands.
"Silly girl," he said softly. "Have Garret unblock Bernice's number. She's the one coordinating with him on the ground."
"Bernice?"
"Yes. She's in Marina City as well. Garret handles your personal security, and Bernice handles surveillance on our targets. The two of them have never gotten along. The only reason you were alarmed is because he wasn't picking up her calls."
Starla took a deep breath. "Okay, I will."
After hanging up, she turned to Garret in the front seat. "My brother said to unblock Bernice's number."
Garret's jaw tightened. He clearly despised the woman. "Are we still going to the orphanage?"
"Let's go take a look," Starla said. They were almost there anyway.
Tanya squeezed her hand. "It's okay now."
Starla nodded.
…
By the time they reached Blue Dove Orphanage, a heavy rain was falling. Tanya wrapped a coat around Starla's shoulders as Garret opened a large black umbrella over her head.
Stepping out of the car, Starla saw Camilla, the orphanage director, organizing people amidst the chaos. A dark, angry bruise circled her wrist.
