Starla closed her eyes, her expression utterly glacial. Luce already had his weapon trained on Fairfax.
Through the windshield, Fairfax saw the gun pointed at him and smirked. "What a heartless woman. I wonder... how about we let her take the bullet first?"
With a violent jerk, he dragged Tanya Mercer out of his car.
"Let go of me! Let go, you psycho!" Tanya thrashed wildly, managing to slap Fairfax across the face.
At the sound of her friend's voice, Starla's eyes snapped open. The sight of a heavily pregnant Tanya being used as a human shield made Starla's breath catch in her throat.
"Hold your fire!" she ordered sharply.
Romy watched in disbelief as Fairfax paraded his hostage. He couldn't see clearly into Starla's car, but the moment he saw Luce lower his weapon, his smirk widened into a triumphant grin.
"Are you going to get out and come with me, or do you want me to get creative out here?" he shouted at her vehicle, tightening his grip on the back of Tanya's neck. Tanya let out a pained gasp.
Without a word, Starla stepped out of her car, locking eyes with the unhinged man across the pavement.
"Let her go."
"Starla, don't listen to him! Just shoot the bastard!" Tanya screamed, her hatred for Fairfax overriding her fear. He was absolute scum.
Fairfax laughed lightly, squeezing Tanya's neck just a little harder. "Do you really think she has the guts?"
"You're a monster!" Tanya spat.
Staring into Fairfax's deranged eyes, Starla kept her voice deadpan. "Release her, and I'll go with you."
