A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1344

"Romantic love is nothing but a useless thief," Jane continued. "It takes up so much space that when you lose it, you convince yourself you're incapable of loving anything at all. But there are countless ways to love—the affection you feel for a pet, the bond with a good friend, or even tending to your favorite plants. They all carry the vibrant colors of love. So, just because you lost one specific kind, don't write the whole concept off entirely."

Listening to Jane, a quiet realization settled over Starla. She was right. Why did she hate the idea of love so much? Because romance had dominated her definition of it. When that romance had cut her the deepest, her knee-jerk reaction was to despise the entire emotion.

"Take advantage of this opportunity," Jane advised. "Your brother isn't built to operate in the light."

With that, Jane left. Alone in her office, Starla opened the file. As promised, it was exactly the ammunition she needed to silence the board members who had been quietly grumbling about her new leadership.

A moment later, Romy strolled in and perched casually on the edge of the desk. "So? Was her delivery helpful?" she asked with a grin.

"Thank you," Starla said, glancing up at her.

"I did you a massive solid this time. Do you finally trust me?" Romy asked. Back in Smaro Town, Starla had kept her walls high, and even now, the treacherous waters of Maxlandia's elite circles made it incredibly hard for her to let anyone in.

"Is my trust really that important to you?" Starla asked, studying her.

"Yep!"

"Why?"

Romy hesitated. She didn't actually know. It was just that nobody had ever doubted her loyalty before, and Starla's constant vigilance was a whole new experience.
