Rowena's complexion, already pale, instantly drained of all color. She stared at her mother-in-law in sheer disbelief.
No longer a part of the family? What did that mean? Was she going to force Robert to divorce her?
After all these years, the old woman still hadn't let it go? She still wanted to throw her out on the street?
"Mom, you..." Rowena gasped, feeling as if the air had been sucked from the room.
It was unbelievable. She had poured decades into this household, yet she had never truly been accepted. The fact that the threat of divorce was dropped so casually proved the grandmother had never viewed her as a true Lynn. She had given Robert three children, yet she was still expendable!
"I told you back then," the grandmother said coldly, "you weren't fit to be the lady of this house. You promised me you'd behave. You promised you'd listen. This entire fiasco has deeply disappointed me."
Rowena felt a chill seep into her bones. She didn't dare argue back, forcing herself to lower her head. "I'm sorry. I never intended for it to spiral like this."
And she truly hadn't.
"Brooke is your own flesh and blood!" the grandmother practically spat.
That was what disgusted the matriarch the most. Throwing her own daughter to the wolves just to protect an outsider.
Rowena's face turned completely chalky.
"You are officially off this matter," the grandmother ordered. "My people will take over and clean up your mess."
Looking at Rowena's pathetic state, the grandmother had zero faith in her ability to handle the fallout. She was stripping her of all authority.
"Mom, please, just give me one more chance, I—"
"You were ready to throw yourself on the sword and ruin this family's name! What chance is there to give?!" the grandmother cut her off sharply.
Rowena clamped her mouth shut.
