A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1020

Two people who had no romantic connection were now tangled in this disaster over imaginary feelings.

Rowena fell silent, profoundly disappointed by Darian's blunt rejection of Yulisa.

"Well, you still can't marry Tanya!" she snapped back. "Even without Yulisa in the picture, your grandmother will arrange your marriage."

The Elders had likely tolerated Yulisa because her family background was decent enough. But now that Darian was rejecting her, the grandparents would definitely step in and pick someone else. Even Rowena wouldn't have a say in it.

Darian just shot her a tired look.

"You and Yulisa are done anyway!" Rowena added bitterly. Despite her anxiety over the girl's captivity, she knew the grandmother's brutal public relations move had permanently destroyed any chance of a wedding between Yulisa and Darian. Because of that, her hatred for Tanya burned even hotter.

"I never wanted a future with her to begin with," Darian muttered.

Rowena glared at him, fuming. She felt like she had been pouring her heart and soul into playing matchmaker, only to realize she was the only one who wanted the match. It was a thankless, exhausting job. She had been cast aside by the Elders, and now her own son was rejecting her efforts.

"Are you sure Starla won't hurt Yulisa?" Rowena pressed, pivoting back to her immediate panic. She fundamentally distrusted Starla. Yulisa's family had been breathing down her neck for days, and Rowena had no answers to give them. She had been the one to drag Yulisa into this mess, and if the girl came back in pieces, Rowena would never be able to face them.

"She probably won't," Darian replied.

"Probably?!" Rowena shrieked. "What do you mean, 'probably'? That's not a guarantee!"
