Surprisingly, Melody smelled the aroma of cooked food the moment she stepped through the door.
Jeremy came out of the study dressed in light gray loungewear. Then, he said, "Wash your hands. Dinner's ready."
Melody glanced at Jeremy, then looked at the table full of dishes again.
She thought back to his behavior throughout the day. At this rate, it'd be strange if she still couldn't connect the dots.
He was extending an olive branch.
Melody placed Echo down and went to the bathroom to wash her hands.
…
When she sat down at the dining table and looked at Jeremy, she noticed that he was still wearing his usual serious, expressionless look.
She opened her mouth, about to say something, but he interrupted her. "No talking while eating."
As Melody looked down, she heard Jeremy adding, "Matthew brought these over."
She nodded in response, not saying anything.
The food tasted… rather mediocre.
…
After eating, Melody considered it for a second before offering, "I'll clean up."
Regardless of everything, Jeremy had helped her today, so washing a few dishes was the least she could do.
As Jeremy stared at her, it seemed as if there were thousands of emotions flickering beneath the surface of his eyes.
After a long pause, he asked, "Must you go to Regallo?"
Melody froze. She looked down and answered softly, "What other choice do I have other than going to Regallo? You know very well how things are at the hospital. It's not a good fit for me anymore."
His hand on the table clenched into a fist as he tried to hide the storm brewing inside him.
He looked at Melody and enunciated his words clearly, "We still have an engagement."
She paused before saying quietly, "It can be cancelled."
That one sentence somehow triggered Jeremy to yank her toward him, and his movements were not gentle in the slightest.
He was sitting down, so the impact forced her to land on his shoulders. When her chin hit him, it hurt so much that tears instantly sprang into her eyes.
However, before she could pull herself together, Jeremy's low, husky voice sounded right next to her ear. "I'm already regretting it."
Those few words kept Melody awake the whole night again.
Jeremy had said that he was regretting it, but what exactly was he regretting?
