Jeremy told Melody that he would take her to Dennis and kept his word. He explained to her about Dennis and Sybil's suicide attempt.
Afterward, she fell silent for a while and asked in a mocking tone, "Is it because they felt guilty?"
Jeremy froze for a second, and his eyes darkened. He didn't like it when she talked in this tone.
Meanwhile, she didn't notice the fleeting emotion in his eyes. She hadn't slept well the entire night because she was racking her brain, trying to figure out Dennis' and Krystal's goal.
Alas, she didn't come to any satisfying conclusion. That said, she still maintained that Krystal played a part in it. It just had to be.
Be that as it may, it seemed like Melody had indeed been overthinking it. The moment she laid eyes on Dennis, the middle-aged man with a kind, honest face struggled to get out of bed to apologize.
The IV needle was still in Dennis' arm when he spoke, his eyes brimming with regret. "Ms. Wardolf, are you here to hold me responsible?
"Jeremy has talked to me in the past, and I know I was wrong with what I did. I was too obsessed with Krys' well-being.
"She had just returned to the Wardolf family, and I was worried that she might get picked on. My obsession got the better of me.
"My mind was clouded, and I made a stupid decision. Please accept my apology. I will make any kind of compensation you want, and I'll even accept it if you want to call the police on me."
Tears streamed down Dennis' cheeks. "But don't tell Krys about this. I don't want her to find out that her dad was this despicable."
He was grabbing Melody's hand tightly. When she didn't say anything back, he let go of her and was ready to beg her.
Meanwhile, Sybil also got out of the hospital bed and looked at Melody with red eyes. Her voice was broken, and her tone pleading.
"Ms. Wardolf, Dennis made a poor decision this time, and we know how much this case has affected you. So, please…"
Sybil trailed off, raised her hand, and wiped her tears away. She looked around the ward and said in a hoarse voice, "Dennis has never done anything immoral in his life. This is his first and only time.
"After he got home, his conscience couldn't bear what he had done. He was also afraid that the truth might come out, and Krys would be dragged down with it. That was why he chose to kill himself instead..."
Dennis' sickly face now turned ashen with despair. He interrupted Sybil with a deep voice before he looked at Melody.
"Ms. Wardolf, I was wrong to do what I did and put you through it. I was just too worried about Krys. She left the Wardolf family when she was young, and she was meek and quiet.
Melody clenched her fists, and her throat tightened so much that she couldn't seem to utter a single word.
Only after a while did she ask, "You guys were worried about Krystal and wanted what was best for her, but is that really a good reason to put innocent people in harm's way?"
Dennis shook his head repeatedly. "I didn't think things would escalate to this point. I merely told the couple about my best guesses, but I didn't ask them to make a mess like this."
She called him out on the spot. "You keep telling me not to say anything to Krystal. So, answer me this. Where did you get the 200,000 dollars you gave to Ben Zimmerman and his wife?
"As far as I know, you guys have an ordinary working-class family, and you have a son who's mentally challenged."
At the next moment, Dennis' and Sybil's expressions immediately changed.
She asked in a trembling voice, "H-How did you find out about this?"
Melody didn't respond to Sybil, but Denvin had gathered this information. Instead, she asked Dennis, "Did Krystal give you two 200,000 dollars?"
