"Are we going to Bermu City today?" Gwendolyn asked. Her voice still held a faint rasp from sleep.
"Yes."
Jared rose from the bamboo bed and walked to the window, looking out at the distant mountains. "We need information on the Nineteenth Firmament. And we need to see if there is any news about Josephine."
When they stepped out of the cottage, Rowan was already waiting in the courtyard.
He had changed into clean clothes. His crimson longblade hung at his waist, and the copper rings on its sheath clicked softly in the morning wind.
He looked far better than he had yesterday, when he had barely escaped the demon hounds.
When he saw Jared and Gwendolyn, he smiled.
It was sincere, with nothing forced in it.
"Good morning, Mr. Chance, Miss Gwendolyn."
He cupped his hands. His manner was even more respectful than before. "The chief asked me to escort you to Bermu City. I know the city well. I used to go there several times a month to sell demon beast materials and buy pills and crystals. I know every street and alley."
The same nine cultivators from yesterday stood behind him.
Their faces were bright with excitement, and anticipation shone in their eyes.
They had been injured in the fight yesterday, but not one of them had died. That was almost unheard of when hunting demon hounds.
They all knew why.
Jared.
Without him, none of them would have survived against thirteen demon hounds.
The beast cores, hides, bone spikes, and flesh from those thirteen demon hounds added up to a fortune.
For a small border village like Clearwind, that wealth was enough to support several years of cultivation expenses.
More importantly, the harvest gave them hope.
With Mr. Chance there, they could do things they had never dared imagine.
"Let's go," Jared said.
The group left Clearwind Village and headed southeast.
Morning light grew brighter. The golden sun rose slowly, warming the land in a soft glow.
Birds stirred among the trees. All kinds of spirit birds hopped across the branches, singing in clear voices.
Now and then, one or two low-level spirit beasts darted through the woods, their fur damp with dew. The sound of footsteps sent them scattering.
Clearwind Village was about half a day's travel from Bermu City.
The path ran through rolling hills. The land rose and fell gently, and thick vegetation covered both sides. Spirit trees and spirit grass grew everywhere.
At times, a rich herbal scent drifted through the air.
That came from wild spirit herbs releasing their medicinal power in the mountains.
Rowan pointed to a low stretch beside the road and told Jared that the grass there was not high-grade, but villagers from Clearwind had often gathered herbs there in the past and brought them to the city to trade.
After word spread that the demon hounds had expanded their range, no one had dared come this far to gather herbs.
As they passed, faint signs of old harvesting spots could still be seen beside the path, now overgrown with weeds.
After about four hours of walking, a huge city appeared in the distance.
Its walls showed through the thin morning mist like the outline of a crouching beast.

Josephine's first time seeing Jared kill isn't with Leyton but with Falcon. Pay attention to your work....
You need to correct yourself, dear author. Josephine was in the City of Herbs when she was a kid, so why is the city's smell surprising to her?...
