Monique nodded, she moved to grab her purse so she could pay the bill. Simon stopped her and said, “Wait, Monnie. I need to use the restroom.”
She knew his intentions. Her tender hand gripped his arm, “Simon, we agreed; dinner is on me to thank you, so I should pay the bill.”
Simon was stunned. He could feel the warmth from her palm, but her fingertips were as cold as they were in the past. Monique suddenly realized something and released her grip.
He smiled like a gentle breeze brushed over his face, “You’ve already thanked me by accompanying me to dinner. It’s lonely eating by myself. Thank you for having dinner with me today.”
“Simon, you helped me out today. Let me pay the bill,” Monique insisted.
He saw the determination in her eyes, so he said, “Alright. Alright. You win. I’ll go to the restroom, and you pay the bill after that, okay?”
“Okay.” Monique smiled sweetly.
He came back quickly from the restroom after a short while. Then, she took her purse out and paid the bill at the counter. The food was surprisingly cheap; the total only amounted to a hundred bucks. Monique was astonished and asked the owner, “Did you miscalculate?”
The boss had a mysterious smile on his face, “Mr. Simon is a loyal customer. We give him a discount every time he comes in for a meal.”
‘I see!’
Monique paid the bill and went back to the table. “Let’s go home. It’s getting late.”
Angel nodded, satisfied. When they left, Simon asked, “Where do you live? I can give you a lift.”
She knew they used to be friends; she met him before when she was in his house. He looked kind and gentle and she liked him. However, why she liked him was because he was nice to Mommy. She liked anyone who was nice to Mommy, but the feeling was not the same as the love she had for Daddy. There was another reason that she wanted to walk in between them. She wanted Mommy and Mr. Simon to keep their distance.
Even so, she did not expect Mr. Simon to happily agree. “No problem, Angel. There are cars on the road, let me hold your hand.”
Since Mr. Simon brought them out for a delicious feast, she nodded and reached out her chubby hand to let him hold her. They walked ahead and Monique followed from behind. As they walked, she felt like time had turned back, but then, Monique always walked in front of him. Then, he would catch up and try to talk with her.
Angel turned around after a short walk to wait for her mother. “Mommy, hurry up. Don’t get lost in the crowd.”
She held her mother’s hand afterward. Simon asked Angel about school things while Monique listened quietly. The three of them held hands as they walked, and they looked like a family of three to an outsider who was none the wiser.
