”I don’t know. I dropped her off at the cafe and came straight home,” Yvonne grumbled.
She did not like the fact that her father was worried about Monique.
“Are you sure?” Zephyrus asked again. It was getting late and Monique’s whereabouts were unknown. He was expecting some good news today and the opposite happened instead.
Yvonne’s eyes widened as she said vehemently, “I don’t know where a woman like her would go!”
Zephyrus felt like slapping his daughter.
At this moment, Monique walked into the house. She saw Zephyrus’s raised arm and asked, “Uncle, what are you doing?”
Yvonne turned to Monique with reddened eyes and said, “You’re back!”
“What’s happening?” There were more people than usual in the house. What was going on?
All the heads turned to face Monique.
Among the crowd, she noticed the man from that morning.
“Why are you here?” Monique said to the bespectacled man.
The man eyed Monique up and down. Was this the same woman from earlier?
She looked nothing like the sleepy fool in the cafe.
Before Monique went to visit her late grandfather, she had cleaned herself up. The old-fashioned clothes were styled back to her taste. The rain had made her hair damp and they clung to her pale face, making her look innocent.
“Keep quiet.” His face was as dark as the rain clouds overhead.
The echo of the slap reverberated through the house.
“Uncle!” Monique did not manage to restrain the man.
Although Yvonne’s intentions were to harm her, the younger woman’s words held no lie. Zephyrus’s action was too extreme.
Monique would definitely earn the wrath of her aunt and cousin for this.
Yvonne’s face reddened by the second. Siobhan screamed at her husband, “Zephyrus Xander, are you out of your mind? You slapped your own daughter for this vile woman?”
Hot tears streamed down Yvonne’s cheeks. The sight of her daughter crying was anguish for Siobhan. She turned to Monique and shouted, “Get out of my house! No one wants you here. Get lost, go to your useless mother for all we care! We’ve been feeding and sheltering you all this while, and for what? We don’t owe you anything.”
