Lemira caught the self-satisfied, triumphant gleam in Evelina’s eyes—she looked every bit the picture of smugness.
Deliberately, Lemira put on a stern face, making it clear she was displeased.
Evelina’s delight only grew at Lemira’s reaction. “Lemmy, we’re family, after all. If you’re willing to come back and help out, I’ll definitely put in a good word for you with Asher. I’d even give up this position for you.”
Of course, by then, the Langston Group would be nothing but an empty shell.
Even if Lemira came back, all she’d inherit would be a pile of debt—nothing beneficial at all.
Just picturing Lemira’s fate tomorrow made Evelina feel perfectly satisfied.
With Mrs. Amelia and Mrs. Waverly both present to witness everything firsthand, word of Lemira’s “disgrace” would surely reach the Everhart family.
By then, would Orion really still want Lemira, after her reputation was ruined?
Lemira could sense all the calculation and barely-contained malice in Evelina’s eyes.
She kept up her act, storming into the main hall with a sullen, angry expression.
She glanced at the wedding candy and fruit platters on the table, then swept them all to the floor.
Lucian walked over. “Lemmy, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just don’t like seeing my house turned upside down. It puts me in a bad mood, that’s all.”
Lemira made her dissatisfaction obvious.
At that moment, Evelina came out, beaming, and said to Lemira, “Lemmy, once my wedding’s over, I’ll make sure everything gets put back the way it was.”
Lemira snorted coldly and didn’t bother replying.
Evelina strutted away, humming cheerfully, the sound of her heels echoing down the hall.
Seeing Evelina’s smugness, Lucian tried to comfort Lemira. “Don’t let it get to you. Evelina’s just overexcited about her wedding and not thinking straight.”
Lemira lowered her voice. “Did you ask Asher about what I mentioned? Did he say anything?”
Lucian shook his head. “Asher’s tight-lipped, almost like he knew you’d ask.”
Even though Lemira had insisted she didn’t care and claimed Asher was lying to her, she still wanted to know if he was telling the truth.
Right now, every clue mattered.
Lucian leaned in and spoke quietly. “Lemmy, did you find something? I want to know too—if there was another reason behind Mom and Dad’s death.”
Lucian hesitated, then said, “What if I get information from Asher and trade it with you?”
“That depends on what Asher uncovers.”
Lemira didn’t give him a straight answer. She stood and headed back to her room.
Lucian watched her retreating figure, feeling a sense of defeat. Lemira was so much more mature now than before.
He muttered to himself in frustration, “How did the Langston family end up like this?”
He just couldn’t make sense of it.
Why couldn’t they be a normal, happy family?
Suddenly, Evelina’s scream rang out from upstairs. “Lemira, what are you doing? Are you out of your mind?”
Lemira was standing by the window, tossing out a pile of things—including jewelry.
Evelina watched in anguish. “Lemira, do you have any idea how expensive that jewelry is? You’re going to pay for this!”
Lemira raised her hand and slapped Evelina across the face. “This was my parents’ room. No one’s dared set foot in here for years. Who the hell do you think you are, turning it into your bridal suite?”
