Chapter 336
Lincoln acted promptly this time, Immediately ordering his men to summon Anthony
Jessica immediately rose and performed a slight curtsey. “Greetings, General Anthony”
Anthony frowned, his face hardening as he glared at Lincoln. “You’re… Jessica from the Yates family?” he demanded, displeasure clear in his voeds a young lady. What’s the meaning of bringing her to the High Court in the dead of night? Are you trying to min her reputation? Lincolis, what a wichu heart you have! Who put you up to this?”
Lincoln quickly replied. “General Anthony, please calm down. I originally planned to invite Ms. Yates tomorrow..
“Then invite her tomorrow! Now, send Ms. Yates back immediately!” Anthony’s face darkened with anger.
Lincoln looked at Jessica, clearly troubled.
“General Anthony, please don’t be angry,” Jessica said gently. “I came of my own accord. Currently, I hold two official capacities. First, as deputy commander of the Royal Guard; and second, as Prince Leon’s official envoy.”
“Leon’s envoy?” Anthony’s frown deepened. “What exactly do you mean by that?”
“Yesterday, Prince Leon and I were together investigating the clandestine thunder grenade workshop. I am fully aware of everything Leon witnessed.”
As Jessica spoke, she kept a close eye on Anthony’s expression, watching for any subtle changes.
A flicker of confusion, and perhaps something darker, crossed Anthony’s brow, but his expression quickly smoothed back into composure. He watched Jessica intently, waiting for her to continue.
Jessica continued calmly, “After confirming the number of bandits and the cave’s layout, Prince Leon and I split up. I went to rendezvous with the Royal Guard and imperial reinforcements, while Leon stayed behind in the cave to investigate further.”
Anthony started, “So you two split up…”
But Jessica cut him off sharply, locking eyes with him. “But before we parted, Prince Leon and I saw someone enter the cave with the rebels.” Her voice turned icy. “Anthony, that person was you.”
Anthony’s fingers tensed slightly, his brow darkened as he seemed lost in thought.
Then Anthony asked softly, concern in his voice, “Leon… how is he doing? Why didn’t he come himself?”
What happened next was witnessed by Leon himself; Jessica wasn’t there at the time.
After all, Leon was a royal prince. It was perfectly understandable if he chose not to come.
“It seems, General Anthony, you still don’t know. Prince Leon has been poisoned with a deadly toxin.”
“What?” Anthony sprang to his feet, his eyes wide with unmistakable alarm as he stared at her. “The dart… was it poisoned?”
“Indeed, a lethal poison that nearly claimed Prince Leon’s life,” Jessica affirmed with a nod.
Anthony’s face went deathly pale. “Leon… is he…”
“Fortunately, my aunt Leanna from the Yates family, known as the Miraculous Venom Physician, has crafted pills that can cure any poison,” she said. It was obvious that Anthony’s concern for Leon was genuine.
Expressions can lie, but the sudden pallor that drained his face was unmistakably genuine.
