The father-son duo probably just arrived, as they were only slightly damp from the sudden downpour.
Nathaniel was crouched down, wiping rain droplets off Callum's clothes.
It was an ordinary scene, yet Mavis thought it was incredibly heartwarming.
Though Nathaniel rarely smiled, and Callum often complained about his strictness, Mavis could sense Nathaniel's deep love for Callum.
Why else would Callum instinctively rely on him so much?
As she stood lost in thought, the pair quickly noticed her.
"Mommy's home! Mommy, hug!" Callum called out sweetly, stretching his arms at Mavis.
Before Mavis even approached them, Nathaniel gently lowered Callum's hands and said, "You're wet. No hugs right now."
"Aww, okay. I'll take a nice bath and then hug Mommy!" Callum conceded.
Seeing Callum always brightened Mavis's world, instantly melting away her worries.
She asked Nathaniel, "Why didn't you go up and wait?"
"It's all the same," he replied simply.
Before they could exchange more words, Callum grabbed Mavis's hand, pulling her toward the elevator. "Let's go, Mommy! Bath time!"
Mavis wanted to ask more questions, but Callum's enthusiasm left no room for conversation. She had not expected Nathaniel to bring Callum over since it was a Friday night, and the little boy usually had a full schedule of tutoring on weekends.
Once inside the apartment, Callum eagerly tugged Mavis toward the bathroom, bouncing excitedly.
Callum, never having been bathed by his mother, continued to protest.
"No! No! I want Mommy!"
The bathroom door slammed shut, cutting off Mavis's view of the pair. Then, two sharp slaps echoed from behind the door, followed by Callum's muffled whimpers.
The boy quickly quieted down.
Mavis frowned, realizing Callum must have been spanked. She disapproved of Nathaniel's disciplinary methods and was about to knock on the door when she heard Nathaniel's voice.
"That's my wife. She only takes baths with me. You don't have a chance, understand?"
Mavis was left speechless.
