As Evan reminisced, he felt a sense of satisfaction.
"Even though we weren't making much money back then, every day felt fulfilling. It's different now…"
Mavis glanced at him teasingly. "What, are you feeling lonely these days?"
He chuckled sheepishly. "Maybe."
Mavis lowered her gaze.
Nathaniel had mentioned that Evan had feelings for her.
While she was unaware of it back then, it was not the case anymore, and it changed how she saw him.
Even though Evan had not openly admitted it, she needed to maintain some distance.
With that thought in mind, she playfully added, "Maybe it's time for you to find a girlfriend. Your mom's been pushing for that, right? She's eager to see you settling down."
Evan simply smiled and replied, "I've still got time. I'm not in a hurry."
"You're not getting any younger. Plus, having kids is wonderful. Look at Callum! He's so adorable."
Her implication was clear.
She was married, and even if she divorced Nathaniel, she would still be a single mom with a child.
In other words, she was not a match for him.
However, Evan seemed to brush past the hint.
"I didn't have time to buy a gift for Callum before coming here, but I'll make sure to pick something up for him soon."
"Don't worry about it. The Nicholls family can buy him anything he wants. He's got more toys than he knows what to do with."
Evan nodded, and they both went back to their work.
Before long, Mavis's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen and saw it was Nathaniel calling.
After a brief hesitation, she answered, her voice flat.
"What do you need now?"
"Mommy!"
"Nathaniel's bringing Callum over soon, so I'm going to run out and grab some groceries. Maybe you should head up to your apartment and get settled in?"
Evan was surprised.
He offered, "How about I come with you to get groceries?"
Remembering Nathaniel's advice to avoid drawing attention, Mavis politely declined.
"That's okay, I've got it covered. Go ahead and settle in. If you need anything, just let me know, and I'll pick it up for you."
"Alright."
With that, they went their separate ways.
Evan headed upstairs while Mavis quickly tidied up and left to buy groceries.
Knowing Callum loved shrimps, she went to the nearest seafood market to get ingredients for their dinner.
After paying, she reached out to take the bag from the seller.
Yet, before she could grab it, a large hand reached in from the side and took the bag for her.
