Nathaniel's long fingers roamed lower from her back, and the sudden touch snapped Mavis back to reality.
In a flash, she seized the moment between his kisses and bit down hard on his lower lip.
Nathaniel hissed in pain, finally stopping his advances.
Mavis gasped for air, her chest heaving as she stared at him with wide, fearful eyes.
"You can't. You absolutely can't force me. If you do, I'll hate you forever."
Nathaniel hovered above her, no longer touching her but pressing his lips together, feeling the sting from the bite.
A faint taste of blood lingered on his tongue.
Though his lip was bleeding, he did not seem angry. Instead, he licked the wound as if savoring it, a strange satisfaction crossing his face.
Mavis was scared.
She glared at him with teary eyes as though he were a dangerous animal, one that could strike again at any moment.
"Has Evan ever kissed you?" Nathaniel suddenly asked.
Mavis froze, still trying to catch her breath, but said nothing.
For once, Nathaniel patiently pressed on, "Why don't you ever answer? What are you avoiding?"
She looked away, her long lashes fluttering as she fought the tears.
Nathaniel grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him, his voice filled with threats.
"How you respond will decide what happens to Evan. So, are you sure you won't answer?"
"I'll answer," Mavis said, her voice trembling. "He hasn't kissed me."
"Really?" Nathaniel arched a brow, clearly skeptical.
"Believe what you want."
"You've gotten good at lying. You stood in front of all those reporters and lied without missing a beat. I have to be sure you're telling the truth now."
Mavis fumed, but there was little she could do.
"No."
"Have you ever held hands? Has he confessed his feelings to you?"
"No, none of that. Evan has never confessed to me. Most of the time we've spent together has been work-related. Occasionally, during our breaks, he'd invite me over to his mother's house for dinner. She was kind to me because I was alone in Vraeyce, far from home. That's all."
She rushed through her explanation, watching Nathaniel's expression shift.
In the dim light of the room, she saw Nathaniel smirking.
"Funny. When I spoke to him, he admitted he's quite fond of you. And you? Do you like him?"
"I don't like him that way. I didn't even know how he felt. He never said anything to me."
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow, and the tension in his body noticeably eased. The sharp, aggressive energy that had clung to him earlier seemed to fade away.
Mavis caught the change in him, and it finally clicked.
"Nathaniel, all these times you've forced yourself on me, kissing me, capturing Evan just to hear the truth from me. Are you…"
