Within minutes, Lionel and his team arrived at the scene and handcuffed the kidnappers.
Before rushing to the rooftop, Nathaniel had placed the unconscious Callum at the corner of the staircase on the ground floor.
With the situation under control and Asher unharmed, Nathaniel turned to find Callum.
Lionel had just finished unbinding Asher, who was staring at Nathaniel with a mix of complex emotions.
He asked coldly, "Nathaniel, why did you choose to save me? Was it out of guilt? Or pity?"
Pity that he had to grow up with endless medication, his body nearly ruined by the virus. Moreover, that pain was destined to last until he was eighteen, marking his entire childhood.
Pity that he could not attend kindergarten and that he had a congenital heart condition that would forever make him a weak person.
Nathaniel's long lashes fluttered as he looked down, remaining silent.
"If you hadn't caught him, Callum would have fallen to his death. Is that how cruel you are to your own son? Did you think that choosing me would make me grateful or stop me from hating you?"
Nathaniel's fists trembled, his eyes turning red. "It was a desperate situation. I didn't get to think about those."
At that moment, the kidnappers' knife was pressed against Asher's neck, drawing blood. Yet, if Callum had been pushed off the roof, Nathaniel would have used all his strength to protect him.
There was no other choice but to gamble on saving Asher.
"I regret the wrongs I've done to you over the years. I truly… am sorry. Although I know those words are weak, and you refuse any form of compensation, I have no other way to make amends for the resentment in your heart besides apologizing. My life is all I have left to offer."
Nathaniel glanced at the gun in his hand, which was loaded with one final bullet.
"Callum is completely unaware of our feud. You can take my life in exchange for the mistakes I made, but please don't involve Callum any further."
He held out the handgun, firmly placing it in Asher's hands.
Asher simply replied, "Don't play games with me. Do you think I won't pull the trigger?"
He withdrew his hand and added, "You saved me today, and I don't want to owe you a favor. Our past is settled, and neither of us owes the other anything. But don't expect me to change my stance toward you. I'll never acknowledge you as my godfather."
Nathaniel looked away and said nothing, filled with sorrow.
Elliot, who had been quietly watching, waited until Asher resolved his personal issues before stepping forward.
He picked up his frail son and addressed Lionel, "Lionel, handle the suspects and take them back to the National Investigation Bureau. I'll take Asher and Callum to the hospital."
"Understood."
The team quickly withdrew from the abandoned building.
Nathaniel soon composed himself and followed them to the hospital.
