Mavis realized that the conversation she had overheard was not just her imagination.
She flashed a bitter smile as she felt increasingly foolish.
Even though Nathaniel had her locked up in the ward, a few gestures of concern from him had made her waver.
However, her wavering only seemed to make Nathaniel disregard her even more.
What else was she hoping for?
Mavis's eyes turned red as she clutched Sheena's hand.
As if trying to convince herself to let go, she asked Sheena, "I heard what you said earlier. He hasn't shown up all night, and his phone's been unreachable. He went to find Kristen, didn't he?"
Sheena remained silent.
"Don't lie to me. I have the right to know the truth. Just tell me, please."
Seeing Mavis's weak yet heartbroken expression, Sheena's eyes welled up with tears. "Yes, we can't find him, but whether he actually went to look for Kristen is just our guess. It's not confirmed."
Mavis scoffed. "I don't need proof. Kristen isn't dead, so it's only natural for him to look for her."
She had endured a grueling night in labor to give birth to their child.
Yet, what was Nathaniel doing during that time?
Was he spending his time with Kristen?
The whole experience had left her heart cold.
Like the storm from the night before, her love had vanished completely.
She felt clear-headed and resolute as she grasped Sheena's hand, pleading, "Sheena, please help me. I can't wait for him to come back, and I don't want to face the situation of going back to the Nicholls family with him. Can you take me away now? I beg you."
Sheena remained silent.
It was a difficult request.
Mavis tried to get out of bed, attempting to kneel before Sheena, but Sheena and Ella stopped her in time.
Weak and tearful, Mavis continued to plead, "Please, I can't live as Nathaniel's wife anymore…"
Faking her own death was an option, but it would require a lot of money and networking.
Then again, a new problem arose.
Ella spoke up, confused, "What about the baby? He's so small and needs proper care. He wouldn't survive the rough journey, and if both the baby and Mae are gone, Nathaniel will definitely suspect something."
That was indeed a serious issue.
Deltsburg was a small coastal country, and escaping without leaving passport information would mean taking a cargo ship out to sea.
However, a baby that young could not endure that.
Moreover, the disappearance of both mother and child would be highly suspicious.
Before Nathaniel left, Mavis was heavily pregnant and nearing her due date.
It would have been impossible to hide that from him.
Ella pondered and offered a solution, "How about this? Mae, you leave, forget the unpleasantness here, and start a new life somewhere else. The baby can stay with Nathaniel. He'll need to take care of him."
