After a long silence, Nathaniel finally turned his chair around and slammed her resignation letter on the desk.
"Why are you quitting?"
"You already know why."
"I'm asking you."
His tone was devoid of emotion, making Mavis feel even more aggrieved.
"I don't want to be constantly criticized or accused of using improper means to stay at the company, and I don't want to cause you trouble with all the rumors. You might be able to handle one Diana, but you can't deal with thousands of them in the company. I can't let my presence affect your career. Our one-year secret marriage agreement feels like a thorn in my side. No matter how much they slander me, I can't reveal my true identity. I've had enough of these endless days. Rather than continue like this, I'd rather leave. Please approve my resignation."
After suppressing her feelings for so long, it felt good to finally pour her heart out.
Mavis let out a deep breath, feeling a bit relieved.
However, Nathaniel's expression did not improve, and his frown deepened.
He gave Mavis a sidelong glance, his tone cold and firm.
"No, I don't agree."
"Why not?"
Mavis was baffled.
Her leaving would not affect him at all. In fact, it would reduce the trouble for him.
Would her departure not be a win-win situation?
"No reason. I said no, and that's final."
Mavis was not expecting any comforting words from him, but she did not anticipate his commanding tone either.
All the pent-up grievances exploded.
"Why do you get to make decisions for others? Just because you disagree, I can't quit?"
Her eyes were red, tears threatening to spill.
Mavis's voice was choked with tears.
She had never cried despite all the bullying at work.
Yet, facing Nathaniel's constant commands and indifference, she could not hold back anymore.
Mavis crouched down, hugging her knees, feeling utterly defeated.
She could not care less if Nathaniel's hatred for her deepened after this.
Watching her crouch on the floor, curled up into a small ball, Nathaniel's blue eyes filled with shock.
He stood still for several seconds, silently sighing.
His long lashes hid the deep blue of his eyes as he walked over to her.
Then, he lifted her in his arms, her small frame still hugging her knees, and carried her to the couch.
