Just then, Gabrielle came out of her room.
She nodded approvingly when she saw them leaving for work together.
"Nate, that's more like it! You should've been driving Mae to work all along. Now that she's hurt, you must take good care of her."
"Mm."
The drive to the office was silent, with Mavis feeling a bit nervous.
If people at the company saw her getting out of Nathaniel's car, it would undoubtedly spark more gossip.
Then again, Nathaniel would most likely head straight to the parking lot.
With that in mind, she decided to let Nathaniel go up first while she followed later.
However, Nathaniel had other plans.
He drove the luxury car straight to the front entrance of the company building.
Seeing the crowded entrance, Mavis quickly rolled up the window and lowered her head, whispering, "This is the company. Why are you…"
Unlike Mavis's nervousness, Nathaniel seemed indifferent.
"You can't walk well. It's closer here. Get out."
His tone was commanding, leaving no room for refusal.
Mavis had no choice but to brace herself and open the car door.
Nathaniel's car was too flashy.
The sleek grey Rolls-Royce and its flashy license plate were unique in Svelton.
People at the entrance looked shocked as Mavis stepped out.
Keeping her head down, she quickly limped away, hoping not to be recognized.
Unknown to her, the scene was quickly spread around the company.
By mid-morning, Mavis' name was on everyone's lips.
That morning, Mavis also learned Diana and the others were fired.
Back in her previous company, Pamela had been replaced by a woman who used connections to advance, so she harbored a deep resentment toward Mavis.
Just then, some other coworkers approached, pulling Pamela aside.
One whispered, "Do you seriously think Mavis is an easy target? If you keep provoking her, she might report you to Mr. Nicholls and get you fired too. Diana and her crew are supposedly getting expelled from Svelton. You better not mess with her."
Although the person's voice was hushed, the pantry was quiet enough for Mavis to hear clearly.
Wait a minute! Diana and her crew were getting expelled from Svelton?
How serious was this?
Pamela caught Mavis's puzzled look and spat out, "Why should I be afraid of such a shameless woman? If she's really all that, let her complain to Mr. Nicholls and get me fired!"
The person quickly pulled Pamela away, leaving Mavis standing there.
For the rest of the day, Mavis felt the piercing gazes from all directions—some hostile, some mocking, and some disdainful.
Everywhere she went, people were staring at her.
Yet, they would quickly avert their eyes whenever she turned around, pretending as if nothing had happened.
