Was Nathaniel going to buy her flowers?
Even though Mavis mentally prepared herself not to expect anything, she could not help but feel a flicker of anticipation.
Soon enough, Nathaniel emerged from the florist empty-handed.
She knew she should not have expected anything.
The rest of the drive home was silent.
Mavis distracted herself with her phone, scrolling through uninteresting news articles until she lost interest and turned to gaze out the window.
The scenery whizzed by, and she saw an elderly person walking slowly along the street, high school students animatedly chatting, and a couple waiting at a bus stop, sharing a pair of earphones and whispering sweet nothings to each other.
They said every Jack would have his Jill…
Mavis glanced at the man beside her, feeling a pang of sadness.
She and Nathaniel were not meant to be.
When they arrived at the Nicholls residence, Gabrielle was already waiting at the door.
She rushed forward and hugged Mavis tightly, exclaiming, "Mae! Happy birthday! I got you a present. Hurry in and take a look at it. Why didn't you tell me it was your birthday? Do you not consider me a friend?"
Mavis smiled and made an excuse, "I actually forgot it was today until Nate reminded me. It's not a big deal, really."
Gabrielle shook her head. "Nonsense! Of course it's important! This is your first birthday with us at the Nicholls residence. We have to celebrate it properly. If Nate hadn't warned me not to overwhelm you, I would've thrown you a huge party!"
Inside the house, the staff were busy in the kitchen preparing for the celebration.
She knew that Gabrielle was genuinely excited for her and Nathaniel's future, hoping they would have children…
Once their contract ended and they finalized their divorce, Gabrielle would surely be disappointed, right?
"Mae, are you listening?"
Gabrielle's voice brought Mavis back to the present.
She smiled and said, "I was just thinking about what kind of gift I should give you in return for such a precious present."
Gabrielle grinned. "Well, you can give me a chubby little nephew or niece to play with soon! That would be the best gift ever."
Mavis blushed.
