"Adora, I've arranged for you to take a few days off from kindergarten. You can stay in the lab and keep Asher company, alright?"
Adora sat quietly in her chair and nodded obediently.
"Okay, I'll take good care of Asher."
After returning to the ward, Yosef came in with a medical tray to give Asher his IV.
Adora sat by the bed, reading a fairy tale book.
Elliot stood by the bed, lost in thought, his mind elsewhere.
Asher glanced at him and said, "Daddy, Adora can stay with me. You have a lot of work, and you should go back. I'll take care of myself and look after Adora. I won't run around and make you worry."
Even though he was only five, Asher was incredibly keen and mature for his age.
Elliot felt a surge of pride and bent down to kiss his son's forehead.
"Good boy, Asher. I'll come back tonight."
Asher smiled and waved. "Go on, Daddy. I'll be waiting for you tonight."
Adora put down her fairy tale book and pointed at her cheek.
"Daddy, I want a kiss too."
Elliot walked over and kissed her cheek gently.
She wrapped her little arms around his neck and gave him several enthusiastic kisses on his face.
"I know you're busy, Daddy. I'll be good and try not to cause any trouble."
Hearing this from the usually mischievous Adora warmed Elliot's heart and brought tears to his eyes.
He held back his emotions, gave a few more instructions, and left.
Yosef followed him out of the room.
Elliot quietly requested, "I'm really stretched thin right now. Please keep an extra eye on the kids when I'm not here."
Since learning about Sheena's disappearance, Nathaniel had gone off the radar, not even returning to the Nicholls residence.
…
Leaving the lab, Elliot quickly went to find Quintin.
Quintin was still diligently working on restoring the phone that Elliot had brought in the previous night.
He was nearly done, with just a few final steps left before attempting to turn it on.
Elliot did not interrupt, sitting nearby and waiting for ten minutes.
"Mr. Jenkins, it's ready," Quintin announced, handing over the barely repaired phone with pride.
"It was badly damaged, but luckily, the data chip was intact. I replaced the screen and some other hardware. While it's not perfect, the original data on the phone is still accessible."
Elliot immediately took the phone and opened the contacts list.
He saved all recent call records and noticed that the phone's owner had several calls with two seemingly insignificant, unfamiliar numbers.
The calls were not frequent, but each one lasted over five minutes.
