After a brief hesitation, Nathaniel kept his phone silent and decided not to answer.
Asher saw his actions and pouted.
"Is that your girlfriend? Nathaniel, are you even ignoring your girlfriend's call? How did a bad guy like you even manage to get a girlfriend?"
Nathaniel felt a bit embarrassed.
Asher continued, "Seriously though, you should call her back. She might be worried if she can't reach you. A real man needs to take care of his girl, you know?"
With his chin lifted and hands on his hips, Asher's lecturing tone was clear.
Nathaniel suppressed a smile, finding Asher unexpectedly adorable.
"You're right, Asher. I'll send her a message."
Nathaniel was not annoyed and calmly sent Mavis a message explaining he would not return to the Nicholls residence.
Then, he put his phone on the bedside table.
Adora was getting tired from playing by the window, and she began to feel sleepy.
She rubbed her eyes and turned from the chair she had been standing on, saying, "Uncle Nate, I'm so sleepy. I want to go home and sleep."
Her sleepy, childish voice was faint and soft.
Nathaniel quickly wrapped his cut finger with a tissue and went to pick up Adora.
"Adora, sweetie, we're not going back to E&S Haven tonight. How about you sleep with me tonight?"
Adora pouted, feeling a bit upset. "Where's Daddy? Where's Mommy? I want Mommy to hold me. I can't sleep without Mommy."
Children were unpredictable and picky just like that.
They could be fine with anyone during the day, but they would have their favorites at night.
No matter how much Nathaniel tried to soothe her, Adora just wanted Sheena.
"It's okay if Daddy's not here, but I need Mommy! Why can't we go home tonight?" Adora whimpered, sniffling as tears started to fall in Nathaniel's arms. Don't they want me anymore? Is that why they won't let me go home?"
Nathaniel had no idea how to handle her tears.
He had never put Adora to bed before and felt completely helpless.
In his desperation, he called Elliot.
Upon hearing that, Asher's mood improved a bit.
However, he still replied proudly, "Who needs your protection? I might not be as strong, but I'm definitely smarter than you."
Adora did not argue.
Instead, she clung to Nathaniel's arm and pleaded, "Uncle Nate, can you take me to find Mommy? If not, I won't be able to sleep tonight…"
Nathaniel sighed.
He tried calling Sheena, but her phone was unreachable too.
What was going on with these two?
It seemed like they had coordinated this.
One phone was off, and the other was on airplane mode.
Out of options, Nathaniel tried to reassure Adora.
"Adora, what story would you like to hear? I'll tell you a bedtime story, okay? I've never had the chance to put you to bed before. Give me a chance, alright?"
