During dinnertime at the Nicholls residence, the three siblings waited at the dining table, but Mavis still had not returned.
Gabrielle was puzzled, asking, "Nate, didn't you pick Mae up today? Why isn't she back yet?"
Nathaniel's expression was grim, looking as if something was troubling him.
"I had something to take care of today, so I came home early."
"That's just wrong. What could be more important than picking up your wife from work?" Marius commented, clearly displeased.
Gabrielle chimed in, "Nate, Mae hasn't been here long. She's not familiar with the area. What if she tried to come home on her own and got lost?"
Nathaniel's face grew grimmer as he kept checking his watch, saying nothing.
They waited another twenty minutes.
The sky was growing darker, yet Mavis still had not shown up.
Gabrielle was getting anxious and said, "Nate, this is too much. You didn't pick Mae up, and she's still not back. The food's getting cold, and you're not even worried."
Nathaniel checked his watch again but remained silent.
Gabrielle immediately called Mavis on her phone.
"Nate, Mae's phone is off, and I can't reach her. Do you think something happened to her?"
Marius glanced at the darkening sky and uttered, "The sky's getting dark pretty quickly today. It looks like it's going to rain. If it starts pouring, it'll be even harder for her to find her way back."
That was enough to make Nathaniel bolt upright.
He strode out of the dining room in a few long steps.
Gabrielle stood up to follow him, but Marius stopped her.
"Don't go making things worse. It looks like they had a fight, and they need to talk it out themselves. You being there would just make things more complicated."
Gabrielle knew he was right and reluctantly sat back down, staring worriedly at the rain outside.
…
The rain poured harder, and the sky was terrifyingly dark, with only the streetlights casting a dim glow through the steady downpour.
Nathaniel walked out of the Nicholls residence with an umbrella, determined to find Mavis.
Foolish.
Completely foolish.
He was frustrated.
Why would she take the bus when Tommy had already offered her a ride?
What was she thinking?
Pushing aside his annoyance, Nathaniel gave clear instructions, "Find out which bus routes she might have taken and give me the most likely paths she'd take to get back to the Nicholls residence."
"Yes, Mr. Nicholls."
As always, Tommy was efficient.
Within minutes, Nathaniel received a message from Tommy detailing three possible bus and subway routes Mavis might have taken to get home.
Nathaniel quickly reviewed them and saw that no matter which bus she took, she would end up on the same subway line that stopped three kilometers from the Nicholls residence.
He immediately headed back to get his car and began driving slowly along the streets leading to the subway station, keeping an eye out for her.
