Mavis sat on the couch, focused on her phone.
She had a notebook on the coffee table and was jotting down something with a ballpoint pen.
Nathaniel leaned against the headboard, playing with his phone, occasionally glancing in her direction.
Seeing her so focused and serious, he could not help but ask, "What are you writing?"
"I'm looking for a job. I just quit my job at the hotel, remember?"
Nathaniel gazed at her from afar. "Yeah, I remember. But didn't I tell you to return to the aquarium to continue working as a manager? Those days when you left were considered unpaid leave. Why didn't you go back?"
As Mavis busied herself, she casually responded, "Svelton is the wealthiest city in Froania. The cost of living here is too high, and my salary barely covers daily expenses and rent. Sending some money back to Harbor City leaves me with almost nothing. This isn't sustainable. I plan to take up a job that pays quickly, make some decent startup capital, and rent a storefront in Svelton to start a small business. That's the only way to establish myself in the long run."
Nathaniel frowned as he listened, his expression souring.
"What kind of quick money-making scheme are you thinking of this time?"
Was it something like the incident at the bar? Selling herself?
Mavis smiled sweetly and said, "I'm thinking of sales, preferably backed by a high-capital real estate company. The commissions are very lucrative."
Nathaniel remained composed but mildly snarky, "While real estate sales offer high commissions, the basic salary is low. As a sales newbie with no experience, you won't have any clients at first. You'll probably live off the basic salary for the first few years. Although you're living here rent-free now, that basic salary won't cover your daily expenses. You'll be living paycheck to paycheck."
Casually glancing at his phone, he continued, "I've also mentioned providing you with a monthly allowance, comparable to what you'd earn from working outside. You can save it if you don't want to spend it. After a year, you'll have more than enough to rent a storefront and start your own business."
Mavis shook her head. "That's your money. I don't want to benefit from it without working for it. It wouldn't sit right with me. I'd feel more at ease earning my own money with my own hands."
Nathaniel furrowed his brows at her response.
A girl who did not care for money in this day and age?
"Mavis, are you crazy? Are you actually turning down free money? Well, this money isn't exactly free. As my contracted wife for a year, you've helped me out of a desperate situation with my family's pressure to marry, and you've provided care for me, like these past few days. So, considering all that, I'll give you 15,000 dollars every month. It's not just pocket money. It's also your deserved compensation," Nathaniel explained.
15,000 dollars every month?
Mavis opened her phone calculator and roughly calculated her monthly expenses.
She just said she would do anything he asked, but she immediately contradicted her words.
If she were truly a maid, he would drag her to the altar room and teach her a lesson!
Nathaniel was getting frustrated, feeling the itch on his left arm under his sleeve.
His right hand was in a cast, so he could not move it.
Hence, he endured the discomfort.
After three unbearable minutes, Mavis happily finished her call and returned to the bedroom.
She was puzzled to see Nathaniel's grim expression.
"What's wrong? Are you having a cramp? Do you need me to call the doctor?"
Nathaniel grumbled, "No need. Come here! I need massages and a scratch!"
