Earlier that day, Nathaniel found out that Mavis had quit her job at the aquarium three days ago.
He never expected to see her here, let alone working as a waitress at the Grand Yara Hotel.
Mavis nervously tugged at her apron, maintaining a submissive stance as she replied, "I-It's a long story, and it's a bit complicated."
Cassie quickly realized that the three knew each other, but she was unhappy about the exchange.
She asked, "Ms. Adora, she looks about the same age as me, maybe even a year or two older. Why are you so nice to her but mean to me, calling me 'grandma'?"
While Mavis's features were beautiful, Cassie thought she seemed rather ordinary, definitely incomparable to herself, the heiress of the Reynolds family.
Adora replied arrogantly, "I don't judge people by their looks. I judge by heart. Mae is kind, just like a little fairy. Plus, she's prettier than you."
Cassie's expression darkened.
"So, you're saying she has a kind heart, and I'm rotten?"
Adora raised an eyebrow. "I didn't say that. But if the shoe fits…"
Cassie was left speechless.
How could Adora claim that a mere server was prettier than her, the esteemed heiress of the Reynolds family?
Cassie could not help but think Adora needed to get her eyes checked.
Nonetheless, Cassie remained silent rather than argue, especially after knowing Adora's identity.
Adora jumped down from Nathaniel's lap and ran to Mavis, grabbing her hand.
"I went to the aquarium this morning and didn't see you. Uncle Nate said you were returning to your hometown and probably wouldn't come back. I didn't expect to meet you here."
Over the past few years, Mavis had taken exceptional care of the little dolphin in the aquarium that Adora adored.
Moreover, Nathaniel had told Adora that Mavis had saved her from almost falling into the water when she was a little over a year old.
Hence, Adora had always regarded Mavis as an older sister and a close friend.
Mavis bent and ruffled Adora's hair affectionately.
Walking down the corridor, Mavis tried to free her wrist from Nathaniel's grip, but he held on tightly, not giving her a chance to escape.
Aside from feeling a slight discomfort, she could also keenly sense the warmth of his palm.
Mavis was stunned, realizing she was actually reluctant to let go.
Nathaniel was unaware of her thoughts.
He scanned the surroundings, searching for a suitable place to talk.
Then, he casually pushed open an empty private room as they passed by other servers.
"Let the manager know I need to use this room for a discussion."
The servers, dressed in a uniform similar to Mavis's, gave her a curious glance before nodding.
"Yes, sir."
