"Did you get so nervous that you ended up forgetting who you are, Shaun?" Hera said.
Only after her reminder did Shaun realize that he had forgotten all about the connections he had because of how nervous he was.
At this moment, he finally realized that he cared for Samantha deeply and was worried about her. He was reminded of all the times he missed her in the past five years. His emotions were laid bare, and he could no longer debate against or deny it—Samantha was really important to him.
…
The next day, Samantha opened her eyes slowly, only to see Hera beside her bed. She was surprised and thought she was hallucinating.
Hera smiled when she saw Samantha rub her eyes.
"It's really you, Hera! Why are you here? I thought I was dreaming!" Samantha rose abruptly, only to be accosted by a dizzy spell. She lay back on her bed, feeling a sudden wave of nausea that caused her to retch.
"Calm down. You went into shock because of your garlic allergy. Your stomach was pumped, but you need to rest in bed," Hera said in reassurance.
"You're finally up, dear. You gave me a real shock. I thought I was about to see my daughter die before me." When she noticed that Samantha was awake, Millie went to the other side of the bed and held her hand.
She looked at the spots on Samantha's face and arms that hadn't subsided yet, feeling her heart ache for her daughter.
Samantha had been in critical condition the previous night, and the doctors had already announced her death. If not for how Shaun had Hera instruct the doctors through a video call, Millie would really have lost the chance to see Samantha again.
Samantha took a while to remember what had happened during the ball. She had carelessly drunk the soda Anna had given her, which led to this near-death experience.
She had previously told Shaun that she was allergic to garlic. With how heated the argument between them had gotten the previous night, she had reason to suspect that Shaun had told Anna to add garlic salt to her drink.
Samantha said, "He probably had you come here because he felt guilty."
Hera asked, "Guilty? What for?"
"Do you know how my allergy was triggered? I drank some Coke given to me by his date, Anna," Samantha said. "I suspect that he told Anna to add garlic salt to my Coke. Who else would come up with such a bizarre combination? Isn't this specifically directed at me?"
Hera remembered how worried Shaun had looked, and she thought Samantha had probably misunderstood him.
"I don't think it was him. He was so worried about you last night." She turned on her phone and showed Samantha something. "Look. This is the entertainment headline in today's papers back in our country. Anna was arrested because she was found guilty of intentional injury."
