Although the number was not saved in her contacts, Izabella had it etched in her memory.
The texts about the amusement park accident and Brett's medical diagnosis had come from this very number.
Izabella had her suspicions that Brett was behind these sinister acts for a couple of reasons. First, she knew him well enough to understand his ruthless approach to getting what he wanted. And since he was sick, facing his own mortality, the fear of future repercussions wouldn't hold him back from committing desperate deeds.
Second, the message was a threat: if Izabella didn't return to Brett's side, what happened to Casey wouldn't be as simple as an amusement park mishap. The brake failure was a warning.
She received an address for Quiet Forest Estates, a place she knew all too well. It was the "home" where she had lived for five years, a home she had decorated herself, imagining a life there with the one she loved.
Unfortunately, looking back, aside from the initial joy, there was little else that brought her happiness.
Now, only Brett had access to Quiet Forest Estates. After the Salotti family had gone bankrupt, Izabella had sold the property to Brett in a bid to pay off their debts.
Distracted by her thoughts, Izabella almost missed the call. She picked up just before the last ring.
"Ms. Salotti," Liam's voice came through the speaker.
No surprise there. She had expected him.
Izabella was indifferent towards Liam. To her, he was an observer, and observers should keep to their place, not intruding on each other's lives.
"What do you want?"
"Ms. Salotti, could we meet in person?"
Liam added, "I also know the hospital where you go for your prenatal checks. If I wait there every day, we're bound to meet."
That sent a chill down Izabella's spine. She glanced at Casey, who moved closer, offering her a sense of warmth.
"What's wrong?" The surrounding noise made it hard to hear the conversation, and without speakerphone, Casey couldn't catch any details. Yet the shift in Izabella's expression was enough to tell him something was off.
Could it be a threatening call? Casey's gentle eyes sharpened, filled with an eagle-like intensity and alertness.
Izabella shook her head. There were other ways to deal with this, but it was unlike Liam to be so relentless unless it was something significant.
"Fine. We can meet, but I set the time and place."
