Mrs. Hart's voice hitched, and tears streamed down her face. It took her a moment to compose herself before she continued, her tone heavy with grief.
"The only body the police found on that stretch of highway was Damian Cooper's. We'll need you to go to the station to identify him. As for Linton... the police are suggesting we give up."
The mountain cliff was steep, the car had exploded mid-air, and the scene had been ravaged by fire. Even without a body, there was essentially no hope that he was alive.
Old Mr. Cooper listened in silence, wiping away more tears. He let out a heavy, sorrowful sigh. "So be it. It's better to lay Linton to rest as soon as possible."
"As for Damian... I won't go identify him. Let the police handle the remains."
This meant Damian Cooper would be treated like an unclaimed body at the morgue, eventually cremated after a certain period. He was no longer part of the Cooper family, no longer old Mr. Cooper's son. He would not be buried in the Cooper family plot, but would become an outcast, a wandering soul with no one to claim him.
Mrs. Hart, her eyes red, nodded softly. "Alright. We'll do as you say."
Old Mr. Cooper was helped into the car. He sat in the back, and it took a while for his grief to subside enough for him to speak. His voice was old and frail. "Elizabeth, I want to see Liliana and the child. My heart... I can't rest easy. They're the ones I'm most worried about now."
"Of course," Mrs. Hart replied.
"Sir, what do you think? When is a good time to tell Liliana the truth? We can't keep it from her forever."
Old Mr. Cooper was silent for a long time before sighing helplessly. "Let's see how things are," he said in a strained voice. "Linton is already gone. We can't let anything happen to Liliana."

At the Hart family estate, the discreetly luxurious black Bentley pulled into the villa's garage.
Old Mr. Cooper's return was sudden and unannounced.
