Gabriel was at a loss. He couldn't bear to tell Liliana the truth.
But his mother was right. Could they really keep Liliana and Amelia away from Linton's funeral? He was the baby's father, and... he was Liliana's childhood friend.
Gabriel thought for a moment. "Old Mr. Cooper is flying in tonight for the funeral. We can ask him what he thinks we should do."
Mrs. Hart nodded, sighing helplessly. "I suppose that's all we can do."
Upstairs, Liliana had finally managed to get Amelia to sleep.
She held the baby in her arms, curled up on the cushioned window seat, clutching her phone.
The screen was open to her chat with Linton. He had sent a flurry of messages, but Liliana's eyes were fixed on the last one, a voice note.
Her gaze was lowered, her delicate face betraying no emotion. Her calmness was so absolute it was unsettling.
After a long silence, she reached out with a slender, pale finger and pressed play.
Linton's familiar, cool voice filled the air, laced with a hoarseness and a complex, indecipherable emotion. It was mixed with the sound of howling wind, making the words slightly unclear.
"Liliana, take care of the baby."
"I love you both..."
Liliana's dark, clear pupils contracted slightly. She lowered her lashes, pressed her lips together, and said nothing.
After another long while, her lashes fluttered. She gently patted Amelia's soft little body and murmured thoughtfully, "Amelia... do you think... Mommy is a jinx?"
