Chapter 175
Chapter 175
At the villa, Brian had just finished simmering the ribs when his phone rang.
It was Madeline calling.
“What is it?” Brian asked.
Hearing the sound of soup simmering on the other end of the line, Madeline felt slightly annoyed, though her voice stayed sweet.
“N–no big deal… I just wanted to let you know my face is fine now. Also, Mr. Atkinson, you didn’t have any conflict with Jessi, did you?”
She added, “Jessi’s pregnant right now, her mood swings are totally normal. Please don’t upset her because
Brian’s expression softened slightly upon hearing the implied concern for Jessica in her words.
of me. Pregnant women have it really hard.”
“Nothing happened. It’s good that you understand,” he replied. “I’ll have the finance department transfer you the money. Consider it an extra bonus for this month.”
“R–really, there’s no need, Mr. Atkinson. I wasn’t doing it for the money, I…”
The moment she heard that “nothing happened,” Madeline’s mood dropped. And when Brian brought up money again, she felt like she’d hit rock
bottom.
“I know, but you deserve this. That’s all. I’m hanging up now,” Brian said, already reaching to end the call.
The soup in the pot was about to boil over, so he had to keep a close eye on it.
Madeline quickly cut in, “Wait, Mr. Atkinson, is Jake home yet? He asked me to take the pastries to Jessi, and I forgot to get back to him. I tried calling earlier but couldn’t get through. Is he already asleep?”
“He went out with a friend, hasn’t come back yet. I’ll let him know when he does. Thanks for helping this time, but next time, just let him take it himself.” Brian’s tone was gentle but firm.
Brian knew that Jessica clearly harbored resentment toward Madeline, so it was best to keep Madeline at a distance from her, lest it affect her mood.
Madeline hadn’t expected Brian to say that. For a moment, her throat tightened with emotion and she was left speechless.
But before she could get another word out, Brian had already hung up.
Madeline stamped her foot in anger.
After having KFC with his friend Emilio, Jacob asked the driver to take him straight to Jessica’s place.
He happened to arrive just as Jessica was getting home from work.
“Mom…”
Jacob instinctively wanted to rush over and hug Jessica, but stopped himself just before reaching her. He stood a step away, carefully holding up a bag of
dried fruit snacks.
“Mommy, look! I bought you some dried fruits. All my classmates say they are the best. See if you like them.”
Jessica’s heart melted as she watched Jacob carefully holding the bag, but the memory of Madeline’s voice message quickly made her guar again.
“Thank you,” Jessica said indifferently. “Next time, just have the driver bring it.
It’s getting late, not safe for you to wander around.”
