Chapter 137
Brian felt a bit secure about the porridge he’d made last night. After all, it was his first attempt at conking.
Madeline caught Brian’s expression, and jealousy burned through her. She kept her voice sweet, though. “Mr. Atkinson, Jessi used to take me out lo delicious food all the time. I know her taste better than anyone. Why don’t I help you in the kitchen?”
“That works.” Brian nodded. “Madeline, I’ll pay you five times your regular rate.”
Madeline’s smile froze. She didn’t know whether to feel happy or jealous. She got triple pay for playing with Jacob and helping him study, but just for helping Brian cook for Jessica, she’d get five times her rate.
In Brian’s eyes, Jessica’s only friend had been Madeline. The person Jessica trusted most and felt closest to was Madeline.
Madeline stepped aside to let Brian pass. As he walked by, his shoulder brushed against hers. Brian didn’t notice, but Madeline’s heart filled with sweetness like honey. She treasured any physical contact with Brian.
When they went downstairs together for the early shift, the other staff saw it quite differently.
At Alkinson Villa, Madeline watched Brian fumble with the knife and asked, “Mr. Atkinson, are you sure you can dice those by yourself?”
Brian had just finished telling her every detail about how Jessica ate her porridge last night.
The leftover half–pot of porridge still had most of the tasty stuff–scallops, abalone, and other ingredients–settled at the bottom. Since all the nutrition was in the meat, Madeline suggested dicing up the soaked scallops, abalone, and shrimp into tiny pieces
Brian wanted to do it himself, but Madeline stood beside him, worried he’d cut his finger.
“Mr. Atkinson, your left hand holding the ingredients should be like this.” Madeline moved to Brian’s left side and placed her hand over his as she spoke. Her face remained calm, but her heart was pounding like a drum.
Brian was so focused on cooking for Jessica that he didn’t even notice Madeline’s touch.
She showed Brian the proper way to hold food while cutting, explaining how this technique would keep his fingers safe from the blade.
From across the kitchen, Sylvie watched the scene unfold with disgust in her eyes. She quietly pulled out her phone and snapped a few photos. ‘This
woman has no shame at all, Sylvie thought. ‘She’s openly trying to seduce Mr. Atkinson!”
After taking several pictures, Sylvie’s first instinct was to send them to Jessica and report what was happening. But then she noticed Brian hadn’t pushed Madeline away. In fact, they were standing even closer now
Sylvie weighed her options carefully. If Jessica really divorced Brian and Madeline became the new lady of the house, and this woman found out about her tattling, she’d definitely blacklist her from working as a housekeeper in high society circles.
Brian adjusted his position and focused on dicing the rehydrated ingredients into small p
I pieces.
Madeline could still feel the warmth lingering in her palm from where she’d touched the back of Brian’s hand. She gazed at his profile with longing wondering when she’d be able to openly snuggle into his arms.
Aher the rice came to a boil, Brian added the dicedingredients he’d been preparing
