Danielle tiptoed into her daughter's room. Seeing Niki’s innocent face as she slept, her heart ached. She didn't want Niki to grow up in a complicated environment, nor did she want this unexpected child to become a burden on her daughter.
Danielle barely slept a wink that night.
She sat on the living room sofa, watching the moonlight filter through the window, mulling over Gian’s words again and again. But nothing could change her initial decision.
Just before dawn, she finally got up to wash, change, and head to the Aerospace Institute to handle the final handover procedures.
When Gian woke up and saw the red veins in Danielle's eyes, his heart filled with concern.
“Maybe you shouldn’t go today. I can call the Institute for you.”
“No, it’s fine. This is the last of it. Once it’s done, I can finally relax.”
Danielle forced a smile and grabbed her bag. “You stay here with Niki. I’ll be back soon.”
When she arrived at the Aerospace Institute, her colleagues were already busy at their desks.
As Danielle approached her workstation, she saw Lorie sitting on a nearby sofa. An elegant insulated lunch container sat on the table before her, and she was surrounded by a few female colleagues, all chattering excitedly.
“Miss Gaylord, Mr. Davidson is just too thoughtful! Bringing you a special meal every day during your pregnancy. We’re so jealous!”
“I know, right? I heard he has a nutritionist plan these meals. They’re healthy and delicious. You’re so lucky, Miss Gaylord!”
Lorie, wearing a smug smile, spotted Danielle and immediately waved her over. “Chief Engineer Crawford, come have a bite! Alex brought me so much, I can’t possibly finish it all myself.”
