“The way he treats her… it’s strange. Not how you’d expect a father-to-be to act.”
Danielle was silent for a few seconds before looking up at Gian, her voice calm. “If it weren’t his, knowing Lorie’s personality, she wouldn’t have gone to such lengths, and she definitely wouldn’t have made such a big deal about an engagement party.”
“All she’s ever wanted is the title of Mrs. Davidson. The baby is just a bargaining chip to secure her position.”
Gian scoffed, his tone laced with sarcasm. “True. Wasn’t he just as devoted to Raffy before?”
“He ordered a paternity test, defended her in public… and for what?”
“The second he found out the child wasn’t his, he became cold as ice. In the end, he’s never cared about a person, only about what belongs to him.”
His words were like a splash of cold water, snapping Danielle back to reality.
He was right. Alexander’s affection always came with conditions.
His current attention to Lorie’s child was likely because it was a Davidson heir, not because he genuinely cared for Lorie herself.
A sense of release washed over Danielle. “He only ever thinks about his own feelings,” she said. “He never considers how much his hesitation and indecisiveness hurt other people.”
Gian squeezed her hand and patted it gently. “It’s good that you see that clearly. From now on, don’t let his attitude affect you. We just need to live our own lives.”
Just then, the digital display in the lobby lit up, scrolling with the latest test result notifications.
Danielle’s heart instantly hammered against her ribs. Her eyes were glued to the screen until she saw her name and the corresponding test. She shot to her feet.
Gian immediately stood up with her, holding her arm. “Easy. I’ll go with you to get it.”
They walked quickly to the report pick-up window. Danielle took the printed-out slip, her fingers trembling with nerves.
She took a deep breath and slowly unfolded it.
The HCG value was printed clearly on the page, far exceeding the normal range. Beside it, the diagnosis read: “Status: Pregnant.”
