Alexander nodded. “It’s nice. If you like it, that’s all that matters.”
Lorie’s smile faded slightly, but she still picked up her phone to take a selfie in the mirror. Just as she was about to press the shutter, Alexander’s phone rang.
The name ‘Jake Davidson’ flashed on the screen. He stood up, walked to the window, and answered the call.
“Alexander, did you know your daughter is about to get a new father at her kindergarten?”
Jake’s voice was laced with fury. “Someone sent me a photo of Harold at the parent-teacher conference with Danielle. Are you just going to stand by and watch another man try to steal Danielle and a child of the Davidson family?”
Alexander’s grip on his phone tightened.
He was silent for a few seconds before a sneer touched his lips. “Aren’t you about to have a new grandchild yourself?. You should be more concerned about that.”
“You—!” Jake was left speechless, finally managing to say in a low, heavy voice, “I don’t care what you think. Danielle was once a daughter-in-law of the Davidson family. If she really ends up with Harold—anyone but him—you have to stop her. You can't let this get ugly.”
“You’re overthinking it,” Alexander’s voice turned cold. “Danielle isn’t the type to seek attention like this, and Harold’s intentions might not be genuine.”
“You don’t need to worry about this. I know what I’m doing.”
He hung up and walked back to the sofa.
Just as he sat down, his screen lit up again. It was a photo from Jake—
In the picture, Harold was bent over, adjusting the collar on Niki's shirt. Danielle stood beside them, a faint smile on her face.
They stood together on the school playground, the scene so heartwarming it was jarring.
“Who was that?”
Lorie leaned over to peek at the screen. When she saw the photo, she smiled and said, “Oh, it’s Chief Engineer Crawford and Mr. Chapman. They make such a handsome couple, don’t they? It would be nice if someone could set them up.”
Alexander stared at Danielle’s smile in the photo, his thumb unconsciously rubbing the edge of his phone.
He didn't respond to Lorie, simply putting the phone back in his pocket and standing up. He told the shop assistant, “We’ll take this dress. Please have the alterations done as soon as possible.”
“We have other things to do. We’re leaving.”
