“From now on, just remember: don’t initiate contact, don’t reach out to him. If he comes near you, just pretend you don’t see him,” Kirsten advised.
“If he wants to flaunt his relationship with Lorie, let him. Let him do whatever he wants—it has nothing to do with you!”
Kirsten’s words were a wake-up call, gradually clearing the fog in Danielle’s mind.
She fell silent for a few seconds before nodding gently. “Okay, I understand. Thank you, Kirsten.”
After hanging up, Danielle took a deep breath. She had just stepped out of the break room when she overheard her colleagues chatting.
“Look, Mr. Davidson is here! He came just to have lunch with Miss Gaylord.”
“Wow, I’m so jealous. Mr. Davidson is so good to her. He’s so busy, but he still makes time to come have lunch with her.”
“Well, they’re fiancés, about to get engaged. Of course they’re affectionate!”
Danielle followed their gazes and saw Alexander walking into the office with an elegant lunch box, heading straight for Lorie’s desk.
When Lorie looked up and saw him, a tender smile immediately spread across her face. She stood up to take the lunch box, and the two whispered to each other, creating a scene so heartwarming it made onlookers envious.
Danielle looked away and turned to head back to her own desk, but a voice from behind stopped her. “Chief Engineer Crawford.”
She turned to see Harold Chapman standing nearby, dressed in a well-tailored suit with a warm smile on his face. “I was wondering if you had time for lunch, Chief Engineer Crawford. I’d like to treat you and discuss some details about the project investment.”
Danielle’s heart sank. She knew Harold was a key investor in the project and couldn’t afford to offend him.
After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded. “Alright, Mr. Chapman. Where should we go?”
“There’s a nice bistro downstairs. It’s quiet, perfect for talking business.”
She looked up at Harold, her eyes filled with confusion. “Mr. Chapman, let’s just talk about the project.”
“The project can wait.”
Hold leaned back in his chair, his tone casual. “I just think someone as exceptional as you, Chief Engineer Crawford, shouldn’t be trapped by past feelings.”
“It’s better for you to figure some things out sooner rather than later.”
Danielle didn’t say another word, simply staring down at the water in her glass.
She knew Harold’s words carried a hidden meaning, but she didn’t want to dig deeper, nor did she dare to—
Some answers were perhaps better left unknown.
