The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 678

“If that’s really the case, why would he bother warning me? What could he possibly gain from it?” Danielle asked, her gaze distant.

Gian shrugged. “Does there always have to be something in it for him? He helped you of his own accord. After all, his son—who wasn’t really his by blood—has already been cast out of the Davidson family. Now he’s left with only one biological daughter, and who knows if he’ll ever marry or have more children in the future.”

He paused, his tone matter-of-fact. “You’re the mother of his only daughter. Even if he has no affection for you, he wouldn’t just stand by and watch you get thrown to the wolves.”

Men might act indifferent on the surface, but when it comes to their own flesh and blood, it’s never that simple.

Danielle shook her head, refusing to dwell on it. “Whatever the reason, his warning felt real. Harold’s been pressing me all day to sign onto this project. Maybe there is something off about it—he’s never acted like this before.”

She remembered how Harold, usually so polite and easygoing, had turned suddenly aggressive today. The change was unsettling.

“Business is always about profit,” Gian said quietly, “but just because it’s a government contract doesn’t mean it’s a trap. The real danger is your business partner. This project won’t be easy, but if we pull it off, it’ll be a real achievement for us. Still, we have to be extra cautious about who we work with.”

He leaned in, his voice serious. “Hire a few more professionals. Get a thorough background check done—leave no stone unturned.”

Gian studied her. “Still planning to leave Northridge City? Or are you thinking about pulling off one last big job before you go?”

Danielle hesitated, thinking back to what Alexander had said earlier.

She still hadn’t figured out who was pulling the strings behind the scenes, or who wanted to see Alexander destroyed. If she just left town now…

She closed her eyes, steeling herself. “I am leaving.”

It was the right choice.

Her mother was an adult, perfectly capable of looking after herself.

But before she left, Danielle was determined to get to the bottom of the truth.

His words were cold and resolute.

“Foolishness!” Jake snapped, turning on Alexander. “Do you have any idea what people are saying about you two? At tonight’s reception, they claimed you were about to come to blows over a woman.”

Alexander forced a thin smile. “Idle gossip, Father. You really believe that?”

Jake’s expression didn’t soften. “When you’re out in the world, remember—you represent the Davidson family. Your actions reflect on all of us.”

He shook his head in exasperation. “My sons, at the same event, competing for the same contract and the same woman. What do you expect people to think? That you’re ready to turn on each other?”

Jake’s chest rose and fell with fury. Clearly, the rumors had gotten under his skin.

He fixed Alexander with a cold stare. “You divorced on your own, didn’t even tell the family. I won’t blame you for making your own decisions, but do you have to keep us in the dark about everything?”

“And you, Nathan—years abroad, and you didn’t learn a thing about manners. You’re even less level-headed than your younger brother.”
